Funny you should ask that. I bought this just now because my IronWolf just started to die with daily increasing reallocated sector counts. Now almost 300. Just over a year in 6TB 7200 model.

Seagate pulled a horrible thing with earlier versions of Ironwolf. They sold the higher capacity models with 7200rpm. But it looks like they were not mechanically stable for that speed and there has been a lot of reports of the same problems as mine, eating away their sectors slowly with increasing reallocation until they die or slow down considerably.

They quietly replaced some of the same models with the same number but spindle speed slowed down to 5600 rpm. So, the earlier performance numbers in reviews no longer apply.

I would not recommend any of the 7200rpm IronWolf drives at the moment.
Any recommended source for trustworthy info on this? I'd like to learn more.

Just in the past year, with a few good reliable drive generations available, I finally was willing to consider seagate again after the disaster that was the 7200.xx series.

I've been happy with my 2x 8TB WD Reds and 2x 10TB WD Whites in my Synology NAS. All drives have two years of 24/7 runtime.

I mean, there's Backblaze, but I'm sure someone's anecdote will come by and completely invalidate their testing.

Anyone have a source for reliable comparison between this and the Seagate IronWolf? That's been bouncing back and forth between $95 and (currently) $105 lately, but if it's a better drive I'm happy to await its next price drop.
I've been using WD Red drives since 2014 in a qnap raid5 enclosure, zero disk losses.

Use for games?
Yes you can but not recommended since you will have long load time. There are other options out there that would better meet your needs.

You could of course but this is more a drive built to be on 24/7 constantly reading and writing and vibrating and it's meant to last more. For a Games drive you could go for a regular HDD that will turn out to be much cheaper by the GB and 7200RPM

Anyone aware of who AMZ may be price matching for this? I'd rather buy from a competitor if at all possible.
This doesn't appear to be a price-matching situation but a special volume deal between WD and Amazon. Almost none of the retailers have this model or have had the OEM version of this. This item was listed only starting last month on Amazon.

My guess is WD just got a huge inventory situation perhaps with an OEM cancellation and moving these units via Amazon with a special deal as a retail box. Retailers like Newegg sitting on an inventory of EFRX wouldn't like undercutting sales of those units and their pricing with a thin margin deal.

WD, based on the website, may be using this model going forward for retail markets and retiring the EFRX.

For the same money, you can get a decent 1TB drive.

Yup, I tend to trust backblaze data, and I believe they're using ironwolf drives with good results/low failures. But of course there's a chance they aren't using the supposed defective models — curious if a source will be provided here. Smilie
