Cool set, definately worth it at this price (I got it for $140 around xmas). Be warned it takes 10x AAA batteries, 4 for the remote and 6 for the train. Remote last forever, train not so much.

100% agree. Great trains, but crappy battery system. Lego needs to go electric.

Hate to break it to you, but batteries are electric.

It would be nice if they somehow had an optional plug into the wall kit but that would be hard to get power to the train with everything being plastic. Would be a hard retrofit to get metal rails in there and some way for the train to pick it up.

A 9V aftermarket solution was just released by FX Bricks, but not sure if that only supports the older system or can be retrofitted for the new ones.

Lego used to have plug in power that was fed through metal rails. Trains were not radio control and worked more like an old school train set. That went away in 2007.

Those tracks are for people who still use the old school trains where the power runs through the tracks.

Converting a modern Lego train to run that way is simple as long as you can procure one of the old motors [ebay.com] that has metal wheels and built in power pickups. They were discontinued over 10 years ago.

You would also need these other discontinued parts (link to ebay [ebay.com])

I have lots of these. Just get some rechargeable AAA batteries and you are good to go.

Yes, that diesel solution sucks.

I got a bunch of the old Power Functions motors and remote a while back but haven't found any IR Receivers at a decent price. Despite the poor battery life, I picked up the cargo train in that last deal and now this, so I can finally run two trains together. Thanks to slickdeals for the email, this ran out quick it seems.

The Kev Master walked into a Wally World and found one on the clearance shelf for $75. He didn't really know what it was but from $160 MSRP to $75 sounded like a pretty good deal so he bought it
