Open up your computer and slap in a WiFi 6E wireless card, buy a 6E router, enjoy much faster speeds. I gained 100mbps going from a killer AC card to an Intel AX210 on fiber.
- It's only officially sold at Costco now, no other retailers. If you go to TP Link's website for it, Costco is the only place it shows to buy from. That makes me think they are ditching it soon and updates may not be available much longer since it's such a narrowly sold product / user base. I tend to like products that have widespread use or at least VIP/corporate use.
- I'm currently using an Ubiquity AC-LR and Ubiquity AC Pro APs with a pfsense firewall handing the routing, and it's rock solid and has way more features than any of the consumer grade routers.
- The "nice" features on this router, like limiting access to devices the kids use, all depend on Trend Micro services, and while it appears to come with a lifetime license, having to put access to your router (via the Trend Micro account that allows remote control for the app) to a 3rd party like that feels pretty insecure. I'm probably just being paranoid, it's not like I'm someone a hacker would target, but I still feel better knowing that if that database ever gets compromised, I'm not going to be at risk.
- TP-Link does not play well with open source developers, so there's no 3rd party firmware to install on it if the factory one has problems with no fixes. The ASUS AX11000 just got support from RMerlin for the Merlin firmware because they help him out, even going so far as uploading code to his FTP server. This doesn't mean much to most people, but it means a lot to me.
- I've only got a few devices that even support 802.11AX, and they are all mobile devices that have no trouble doing anything over the current AC setup. My NAS and workstations are all plugged in.
- Since Wifi 6E is just around the corner and requires hardware to support it, I'd rather wait a bit longer for that. The "E" opens up a whole new frequency range these devices can use, so it should be pretty uncluttered for a few years while everyone else catches up.
At $280, it's still tempting, but I'm gonna hold off and probably spend a lot more in a few months on something newer
Anyhow, for me at the moment, all I need is a pretty straightfoward wireless router that supports wifi6, has great througput and has a 2.5gbps WAN port. I'll take the $185 and buy something else... :-) (actually I bought this last week for $300, but Costco has a 30 day price adjustment policy).
