If you have Alexa Dots, you can have it pick up the alarm noise and alert you when it goes off, it's called Guard on the Alexa App.
I wish this were hard-wired with battery backup instead of exclusively battery powered.
First alert really has their finger on the pulse of what the consumer wants. /Sarcasm

We've been telling them for years now that we want a smoke detector that's hardwired with a battery backup & Z-Wave. Apparently it's an impossibility at this point or something.

You can have a Z-Wave smoke detector as long as it's battery powered or you can have a hard wired smoke detector that doesn't have Z-Wave but you couldn't possibly fathom having both in one unit.

And for that reason, I'm out.

Kidde has a good series of wired smoke/co alarms with wireless battery backup, 10 year lithium batteries. And they sell pure wireless alarms with 10 year batteries that interconnect with the wired if you want to add a few without running new wire. They have their own proprietary smart home hub though, not z wave.

And they aren't dual mode smoke alarms, photoelectric only. I have some interconnected with kidde wired smoke only ionization alarms that need battery replacement. It's a real headache.

The thing that also sucks about these, is that the battery goes out once a year, and it's always at 3:00 a.m. and it's always so loud, and you have to go get a stool or something and unplug it or change the batteries. 4 years going now.

essentially if you use these your committing to waking the whole house up one night a year

I have 2 of these. I was never successful at getting them integrated to my OpenHAB system. Nor was anyone else on the forum (last time I checked).
I have successfully integrated 3 z-wave door locks and a z-wave thermostat so the system works.

We have two of them we use with our Ring alarm. Battery health shows in the app making it a minimal concern. From the usage ive seen they'd last 3-4 years. We change them once a year for piece of mind.

Is it better to get the Carbon
monoxide and smoke alam separate for placement issues? (smoke alarm on or near the ceiling and carbon monoxide lower, on the wall)?

Or do these compensate for that somehow?
CO detectors can be installed anywhere, as long as they get air circulation. They can be near (or on) the ceiling, they can be close to the floor, it does not matter. CO mixes with the air.

Smart Things Hub? What is the usual price of one?
I think you can get one of those hubs for around $79 or so.
