If you have Alexa Dots, you can have it pick up the alarm noise and alert you when it goes off, it's called Guard on the Alexa App.

I wish this were hard-wired with battery backup instead of exclusively battery powered.

First alert really has their finger on the pulse of what the consumer wants. /Sarcasm

We've been telling them for years now that we want a smoke detector that's hardwired with a battery backup & Z-Wave. Apparently it's an impossibility at this point or something.

You can have a Z-Wave smoke detector as long as it's battery powered or you can have a hard wired smoke detector that doesn't have Z-Wave but you couldn't possibly fathom having both in one unit.

And for that reason, I'm out.

anyone with ring alarm monitoring service. If I add this unit will it show on my certificate that I have fire monitoring?
I don't know about a certificate but as soon as you add one to Ring, I got an email stating that I needed to permit for fire...
You Need A Fire Permit for Ring Alarm Professional Monitoring
Hi Neighbor,Thank you for adding smoke and/or carbon monoxide monitoring to your Ring Alarm. It's your responsibility to get a fire monitoring permit or registration for your Ring Alarm.

I have 10 of these installed across the house and really like the convenience. I bought these from Costco for the $79 for a 3-pack price. Here are a few pointers to consider:

- The setup is very easy and clean
- you can setup with either SmartThings hub or Ring
- with SmartThings, you just get the notification on the phone, potentially send out phone/text notifications to others based on alarm status
- With ring, you can integrate with the overall Ring professional monitoring subscription service
- if integrated with Ring, these will send automatic notification to the Fire Department and request help. Good if it is a real issue, but if you drum up some smoke due to some cooking, then you are stuck explaining it to the fire fighter who shows up.
- In my case I have both Ring and SmartThings, but have kept these integrated with SmartThings to avoid any false dispatches.

Net-net I love the convenience and ability to manage these through a common device/interface. Plus the "battery low" device notifications are more manageable instead of having to keep everyone quite to figure out which one of the alarms is chirping 😀

The batteries will last a max of 6mos and then begin chirping every 30 seconds at 3am to alert you they're nearing end of life. I had 4 "networked" first-alert battery only alarms. Felt like one was going off every month.

I ended up taking a weekend to wire everything up just because it was such a pita.
That is true, but they tell you to replace all batteries in smoke detectors every 6 months anyway. Wired ones are great but they also need batteries as backup.

Mind as well get and replace them. Or a reminder to check the batteries. You would be glad you done it.
Besides, if you live in a condo, more than likely they will require a check up every year or so.
Usually, these last about 5 years, if it's longer than that, you are in the zone to replace the device.

Had the same issue. Someone suggested getting 'industrial' batteries, and seems like it's lasting much longer before the beeping starts.
i got these 8/19 and just had to replace the batteries the first time in january this year. In the ring app it shows what level the batteries are so I just looked at which were low and replaced them even if they weren't beeping.

Does anybody have any false alarm issues with these smoke detectors? Photoelectric Smoke Sensors have problems with false alarms.
I have never had them go off. On the other hand, the hardwired system i have a hardwired set of kidde pi2010 photo electric and ionization. They go off from showers in the winter and dust in the summer. I end up replacing at least one a year because it won't quit. It really sucks having a houseful of alarms going off full volume and having to track down which of the 14 in the house is the one that alarmed initially. you can't silence them unless you find the right one.

yes, if you need a permit for fire alarm you will need to get that also as others have noted

How do you hardwire these?
I have one that I use with Ring, recently started chirping and no matter what batteries I put in it, brand new, rechargeable, you name it—it starts chirping within a day—driving me nuts.

Smart Things Hub? What is the usual price of one?

Love these as hardwired isn't something I was looking for. These work well with the Ring alarm
On newer buildings, building codes now requires hardwire to these devices. Even if you remodeling the house where you tear down to the studs, then the code applies.

Networked is not the same as zwave.

I have several of these and the AA batteries will last pretty well a year. And z-wave reports the battery level. Set up an alert at 30% power to buy batteries. Change them at 20% (yes, in theory there is still months of life left. Or a tempersture change will turn that into days of life left. Change the batteries)

That does not apply to networked smoke alarms. There is a carve out for battery powered smoke alarms that are wirelessly connected. Z-wave is used by many security systems and a monitored smoke alarm offsets the hardwired provision.

Check your local code to be sure but most news reports gloss over this exemption because it is nuanced and applies to <1% of people.

Is it better to get the Carbon
monoxide and smoke alam separate for placement issues? (smoke alarm on or near the ceiling and carbon monoxide lower, on the wall)?

Or do these compensate for that somehow?

When connected to ring, Is this also possible to set this up to go off as a siren when the ring system goes off (e.g. intruder)

Bought 3-pack from Costco two Black Fridays ago. "Wireless" printed on face so guess they're 2nd gens. Replaced batteries on 1 unit a month ago, so originals lasted 14 months before it beeped. The other 2 units almost at 80%. I think they start beeping around 79%.

Have these integrated with Hubitat. Can see smoke, CO, battery levels individually. Have rule setup to send phone notification at 80% battery so I could replace them before it beeps in middle of night. Have other rules setup for smoke and CO events, like blasting sirens, repeated phone notifications, loud warnings through Alexa and Google Home mini's, flashing lights...etc
