I went to Hamer Toyota and they had balls to mark those up 3k plus 1k gps add-on. Came to $56.5k with no negotiation because stimulus money is here and dealers wants it all. Sad state

Hydrogen Fuel cell is exempt from CA rebate income limits.

"The income cap applies for all eligible vehicle types except fuel-cell electric vehicles."

$80 for 300 miles of range vs. $10 for a BEV is a pretty compelling reason to go BEV..
They give you a debit card with $15,000 and is good for 6 years.

I just looked into the tax credit. These tax credit are non-refundable. If you paid 5000 in tax, you will only get 5000 back, not 8000. Also, these are TAX CREDIT not TAX DEDUCTION. Please google and see the difference.
Great point.

So in hindsight, a single taxpayer making around 68K AGI and just using the standard deduction would equal to a taxable income of 55,600 which would net $8,028 Federal tax.

That's the federal credit - you have to pay $7,500 in federal taxes to get the full benefit.

California's is an actual rebate, nothing to do with taxes.

Why not just buy a used Mirai for $17k and still get the $15k fuel card? After you use up the fuel card you can sell it and still break even.
Because that car is ugly, slow, and has a smaller tank.

The biggest thing that stopped me from buying this (other than hydrogen fueling stations) is looking at the resale value of the previous generation of this car. A 2017 Mirai is only worth $8-9k. My 2011 Camry (base LE trim) is worth that much!
If the new Mirai is worth that much (and I think it will be worth more) in 6 years, then this is basically a free car.

That's a great deal! Definitely more mainstream/versatile.
For me the extra $15K in fuel card and having fueling options near me tipped it in Mirai's favor. If I count the fuel card value, my cost is ~$8,500 after tax financed at 0% for 72 months.
This is my calculation as well, but to be fair the fuel car isn't really worth $15k but about half that due to the high cost of hydrogen. I'm hoping the price of fuel comes down over the next few years as more hydrogen cars hit the road.

you can buy Mirai instead of lease only?
thought some of the tax credits have income restriction and are first come first serve until depleted for the year as well?
Yes, but it's not a deal because you don't get the $20k incentive.

This car depreciates more than any other Toyota model.

You don't buy a new Mirai. You lease one if you really want one. If you can score the fuel card buying one used may make sense but certainly not new.

Doing some fuzzy math it would seem like Hydrogen would need to be in the range of $6-7$ a KG to compete with gas? I have a sonata hybrid....Pretty reliably 35-40 MPG so call it 10 cents a mile. I don't think that price is economically viable as the electricity involved to make it will always be worth more than energy storage. You could use off peak energy, but in California that's expensive too and planned for EVs. It seems like EVs can store a KWh and consume it more efficiently than converting it to Hydrogen. It seems like if you strip all the subsidies away, even at scale, the only way to make the math work on these is to forget EVs exist.

"A 100% efficient electrolyser requires 39 kWh of electricity to produce 1 kg of hydrogen. The devices today require as much as 48 kWh/kg. So, if electricity costs are 0.05 US$/kWh, the power cost for the electrolysis process alone is 2.40 US$/kg of hydrogen."

So walk this quote above back, a Tesla can go 100 miles on 36KWH. The same 36KWH gets you at theoretical maximum 60 miles or so on a fuel cell.

In the market for a new car. Waiting for a good discount on something that I'm going to enjoy driving rather than some tiny eco car. I get some people are into these things, but it would seem like driving around in a tuna can with wheels.

Last week got hit by a school bus. Smilie Yep, a frickin school bus. They were getting ready to do a practice route before school started back up, and the bus tried to go around me two lanes over and get into the turning lane. He ended up pushing me forward with the side of the bus, so now I have school bus yellow paint all over my bumper. Smilie
