They dramatically affect the ambience, and if nothing else I use them during the day for 5000K-ish blue white and turn them to orange into evening. Colors for late night coding or gaming, etc.
Hue is expensive, but you get what you pay for. Quality product, great software, no fuss.
I don't have time to figure out zigby protocols etc to work with cheaper ecosystems.
Unsure of a better method of hanging these behind the TV.

This is a pretty good price(although I would love to see $75 to match the deal from 2019). You can plug 3 lights up to the same plug. With larger TVs you will definitely benefit from the third light. 2 lights do a pretty good job for a 55-in screen.
I have not used the HDMI sync. I personally think it is way overpriced. I'm sure it would be neat to have the colors change with the screen, but in my opinion that totally is against one of the main purposes of TV black lighting which is to have a consistent light behind your monitor or screen to help with eye strain. And it really does help. So if you don't have TV backlighting just buy this.
Oh, it works really well with Google Home so you don't have to constantly open the Hue app.

If you have an HTPC or you can install it onto a laptop and HDMI into the TV.
It may work well with video but it was causing some weird lag issues and was dropping my frame rate for gaming but never tried watching movies with it since I have a sync box for my tv setup in the living room.

It is not as hard as it sounds, but not easy as well. Need few tries.
I was able to get it work but it does not work all the time ( maybe 2 days, then i have to run code again, just need to press run in UI)
Recently, Netflix and Amazon prime do not work with Hue Sync Box from what i have read ( due to screen recording that Hue Sync box does).
So personally i use this only when i really want to sync for certain movies.
If you follow the link and try, it will cost around 100 bucks, but it will work i would say 50% of the times. Need to keep trying if the sync doesn't happen.
If you buy sync box, it still wont work with Prime and Netflix. So it is a lose-lose scenario IMO.
I tried Raspberry Pie with the lights as i wanted to learn something for 100 bucks.
