The steam wand on the Calphalon is much better. The 58mm portafilter has the added bonus of being able to upgrade to a better tamper. So far, for $350 (after tax), this isn't a bad machine.

The grinder is kind of annoying though. It tends to grind to one side so I have to take out the portafilter and tap it a bit for the grinds to distribute evenly. Not horrible, but it's something I noticed. The grinds are fairly consistently sized, though, so that's a good thing.

I'm more of a latte in the morning kind of guy so I like the steam wand being both quieter (than the BBE) and better at producing micro-foam.

Also, this Calphalon has tended to produce better shots so far, but I've only had it for a couple days now.

Still beats my old DeLonghi EC155, which was a reliable, but super budget espresso machine.
Better shots? Were you using pressurized baskets on both?

If I already own a quality burr grinder (Barratza Virtuoso) would the Gaggia Classic be a more consistent and quality espresso machine versus something like this?

Nope, not pressurized. I think the grind setting is easier to adjust on the Calphalon than on the BBE, so that might be why it's easier to tune in a good espresso shot.

You tried adjusting BBE inner burr?

I have not. I've only used the BBE at a friend's place, so I haven't spent a considerable amount of time playing around with it.

Maybe silly question but can this make a cup of coffee as well? Not just a double shot but a full cup? I find when I just let the cup in my Delonghi run longer the coffee tastes sorta burnt/nasty. If just make double shot and than add milk its too cold.

Calphalon isn't known for espresso machines, but for decent pots and pans. They clearly have an arrangement with Sunbeam Australia ( https://www.sunbeam.com.au/kitche...e-machines [com.au] ), though it seems nobody recognizes this. Doesn't have the Breville name, but reviews have been solid across the board.
It seems like Sunbeam Australia is Breville? I've seen identical models rebranded as Sunbeam/Breville(for example: https://www.sunbeam.com.au/kitche...k-classics and https://www.breville.co.uk/breakf...CF126.html). This reddit post seems to state that too: https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso...t_sunbeam/

Nope. You could make an Americano though, which is espresso with hot water. The hot water function on this works well so far.

Wait! Amazon sells the same one, minus the grinder, for $199.

I already have a good grinder. Can someone comment whether I should buy the cheaper one without a grinder, or are there more differences between the machines?

If you already have a grinder that can grind coffee fine and uniform enough for espresso then you could definitely save some money and buy the one without a grinder. The non grinder version only comes with pressurized (double wall) baskets though so to make real espresso with it you will need to buy a non-pressurized (single wall) basket.

There are more differences then just having the grinder :
1)Comes with both pressurized & non pressurized baskets
2)Adjustable brew temperature
3)Adjustable Pre Infusion with 3 settings
4)Larger Milk Jug (16 oz vs 12oz)
5)Cleaning Brush (Grinder & Group Head Shower Screen)
6)Blank Cleaning Disc (For Back Flushing) because this model has a 3 way solenoid valve while non grinder model does not !

Sunbeam (AU), Breville (UK) & Calphalon (USA) are all sister brands of Newell ! They are all the same identical machines except for country specific branding, packaging & external esthetics!

Do no confuse Breville (UK ) which is Newell with Breville (AU/USA) which is marketed in UK as Sage ! Its all very confusing but has to do with country specific brand licensing .

Sunbeam AU is a well respected brand in AU & has been making espresso machines for years at various price points some are pro summer level (Cafe Series) while others are budget models which are virtual clones of Mr Coffee sold here in the USA.

Its a shame that Newell is not supported the Calphalon Temp IQ here in USA as to the level they do with Sunbeam.AU. Over there you can actually purchase spare parts as well as accessories for the machines !
