This is a good example of the false dilemma fallacy. It could also be the case that he enjoys playing Minecraft AND enjoys the board game. For me, with two Minecraft playing kids, 9 & 14, this is a nice way to encourage non-screen play, and though I suspect my kids will still enjoy the video game MORE, there are times when I want them to play non-screen games and this is a nice intermediary enticement.
Overall this is a pretty good game. I play with my son, who really likes minecraft. It keeps the theme going for him, but doesn't involve electronics. It also keeps my attention, not being a huge fan of minecraft. It is not a hard game to learn, so younger kids can play.

I would think my son and his friends would rather play minecraft over this board game.

Maybe. It definitely doesn't seem like it catches the Minecraft experience.

However, in a vacuum, it just happens to be a good board game. The Minecraft theme might be slapped on, but it fits nicely.

Seems like a fun concept but I agree that I would rather play minecraft and build in biomes than play some sorta board game.

I have 3 kids that enjoy Minecraft (6, 10, and 12) and I play this board game with all of them. The 6 year old is undefeated in his first 3 games, so that should tell you how there is perhaps a bit too much randomness to the game. But, it's fun, and when a 6 year old can legitimately beat an adult, that's good, because as a general rule I don't let my kids win at pretty much anything (life lessons!).

Overall, fun game, would purchase again, and playable at all ages. Don't have to care or know about Minecraft for it to be fun.

Bought this the last time it was on SD. Gameplay is quite boring and the scoring system is needlessly complicated. The only cool part about it is building the cube out of the tiny blocks.

It just doesn't feel like the Minecraft experience.

I do not recommend the game at this price.

Have it and enjoy it. There is a more chance in this game than most, but overall its a different concept and the theme keeps kids into it. It's a good beginner game to help kids start to learn how to strategize and teaches them some board game concepts without having to explain too much since they grasp the general concept through the theme. There are different ways to win, and you can intentionally draw out or end the game depending on how it benefits you, something most kids games don't do. It's also a 7.1 on BGG which is pretty respectable. If you are looking to get away from guess who and chutes and ladders to something with more depth and your kids are familiar with minecraft, this is a good option for the 6-10 age group while still giving them a good chance at honestly winning.

I bought this for my 5-year-old son who really enjoys playing Minecraft on computer. Those who say it doesn't capture the Minecraft experience may be correct, but that isn't why we like this game. I'm not sure how you would capture a sandbox game experience in a board game?

We like it as a Minecraft-themed strategy game. I found it to be a good introduction to strategy games for my son. Even though he is 5 he was motivated to learn how to play and understand strategy because of the Minecraft theme. We bought it for $30 and I don't regret it. At this price, if you are looking for an intro to strategic games this might fit the bill.

does anybody have the minecraft card game?
It has good reviews and I was thinking of getting that for my kids cause to be frank there's less stuff for them to lose.

Agree. Bought this month's ago for my son's (who loves Minecraft) bday. Played it once and never touched it again. Thing is, Minecraft theme aside, judging this board game on its own merit - it's still a boring game.
