A special model with an ash body and traditional neck feel.
The G&L ASAT Classic is Leo's final word on the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on axe. This special version features an ash body in natural gloss, a 9.5" fretboard radius and a tortoise pickguard.
Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge, the G&L-designed alnico pickups deliver crisp attack with complex harmonics while individual brass saddles offer modern levels of intonation refinement.

Guitar is absolutely flawless. No quality/finish issues. Fret ends are rounded and smooth. Neck joint is a perfect fit. Neck feels unfinished or lightly finished which I like.
Several good reviews of this guitar on youtube. Make sure you watch the videos of the limited edition model with the alnico pickups not the standard tribute with MFD's

The only issue might be the style of guitar your son would prefer. Depending on age and music choice he may want something more shreddy like an Ibanez or Jackson. Or something more flashy with a colored top
I think the reason G&L is always on sale is because they don't really move. There is a lot of competition out there. I don't think they're bad instruments, even though I haven't personally played one myself, I just don't know anyone who has one and they never seem to be on anyone's radar. But a good deal is a good deal, regardless. And at this price point it does seem like a good deal....however, will it be better than a $200 Xaviere tele from guitar fetish? I don't know. But there are plenty of good instruments to be had at $300 bucks, especially used.
Who knows, maybe at some point I'll bite the bullet and order one on a whim just to see what I think. But probably not today.
With that being said, I don't think G&L is very hot in the used gear dept, in as much as they aren't very hot in the new gear dept. So, unless I'm missing something, Jamie...Who is paying $399 for a used G&L guitar?????? Who is on the "LOOKOUT" and hot pursuit of G&L gear???? As much as I'm in that world, the brand G&L never comes up. That isn't to say that there aren't G&L fans out there. There must be because the company is still around, however compared to other brands, I just don't think they resonate as much. Just my personal opinion.

As others stated, mine is flawless, build-quality wise. The neck is a bit weaker than the bridge, but works for me.
Put in a set of '51 Nocasters or Twisted Teles, and for @ $500 I think this leaves a Player series in the dust.
Jump on one of these, next time around...well worth it.
