I've got a 20 year old controller. To save water I put a SONOFF smart relay in the box to disconnect the power to the ground wire. An IFTTT routine checks the weather and toggles the relay as needed. Not smart like Rachio by any stretch, but it made it "brighter" for a whopping $15 and I reduced water waste by a ton.
As usual, it depends.
If you want only the basic smart control of the sprinklers, then I'd recommend Wyze ($58). If you also want weather-based control, paying Wyze's recurring fee for Sprinkler Plus ($10/year) will still be cheaper than Rachio for the first 9 years.
If you have more than 8 zones, get the Rachio. If you want weather-based control, and you think your sprinkler controller would last longer than 9 years, the Rachio would be cheaper AFTER 9 years. (Of course, Rachio's Return-on-Investment is even worse with their regular price, instead of this deal price.)

For me, from all these IOT/smart things craze nowadays, smart sprinkler systems is the most worthed. It actually save you money. I got mine (Gen1) for $95 4 years ago. Set it up once and never touch it anymore. It automatically adjust as seasons come and go. must have!
Great question - I'm not sure. I also have an unopened 12 zone from Costco (purchased in October). They appear to be of a similar model (vs the "e" version), just different number of zones. I bought this 16 zone version for ~$148 shipped, and the 12 Costco version was ~$181 shipped, so I'll be returning the Costco 12 zone.
Thanks. Yes I'm not talking about e version but the 3 without e. Costco's differentiator is the 12 zone support and the yard mapping feature. But it seems this is now standard with all 3 versions (6, 12, 16 zone model).
I'll probably order this one and return Costco. I already ordered on Amazon but returned that for Costco. Now I would have to return the Costco one for this one.
Would be great deal with $75 rebate from local water company.

Would be really nice if these guys ever supported more than 16 zones on the same controller. I get a lot of people don't need more than 16 but some of us have large yards and a piddly 3/4" water meter so we need a lot of zones! And don't give me this water on one day on one control and another day on another controller crap
I turn on my Rachio when my neighbors kids come out to play in the backyard. They always kick the ball into my yard and jump over the fence ( with no permission) to try and retrieve it. Its part of my deterent strategy. *evil laughter*
The lack of any real on-controller manual interface on the Rachio is really unfortunate. Guess we'll stick with the BHyve. Good post OP for those that can use...
Out of curiosity, how often do you use the manual interface? I've had my B-hyve for a couple years now, and I can probably count on one hand the amount I've actually used it. To me, the main point is to be able to not have to go to the garage to set things. I primarily use Alexa or occasionally the app.

Thanks for heads up. Sorry I'm new to this just bought house 4 months ago. How do I find out if I have indexing valve?
Look at the valve for your irrigation system. If there is one large plastic round head, usually green, with multiple white pipes coming out of it, usually 3/4 inch, then it is an indexing head. Other systems have one valve per zone. I live in Fl. and converted my system over to multi zone and it is way better. You cut out zones from an everyday to every other day schedule or longer or shorter watering times. You can also water one or a couple of zones manually when you want. The indexing valve starts and goes through each zone in order until it is done unless you are at the timer and force it to move to the next zone. I am not sure if the timer has the ability to do that with the app.
Great timing. I recently bought a house with an older rainbird system. Just happened to place a $75 order to replace the rain and freeze sensor last night. Cancelled that and bought this for a few more bucks.
