Not local enough
I was going to buy one of these, then I went to www.wunderground.com/wundermap and found out someone a block away from me had one, so I just bookmarked his weatherstation on my phone and have hyper-local weather for free. one day i'll buy one, till then, just as good.
I don't need this, but I need this.

Will a thunderstorm ruin it? What about a hailstorm? Genuinely asking from the midwest...

A thunderstorm how? If it gets struck by lightning I think you'll have other problems to worry about. The body is plastic so large hail might damage it but acurite has replacement parts on their website for cheap. I have a lower end atlas and it works great sitting outside in georgia all year.

Dang -- at $91, the AcuRite Access Hub necessary to access this from your phone/internet is darn near as much as the weather station itself. 😮

http://www.walmart.com/ip/AcuRite.../436238112

Still pulled the trigger. Seems like a great weather station. Now to watch for a deal on the hub....

The PWS transmits data on 433mhz. So there are a few ways to capture the data for your own app.

If lightning hits it or the wind gets too strong (tornado?) or the hail too big then yeah, it could be destroyed... it's not indestructible.
