I picked up a similar device from Goodwill for $1. I don't think they had any idea what it was. I wouldn't take a chance writing on it with dry-erase markers, since the surface is plastic, and the solvents may etch the plastic. Maybe if you put a piece of glass over the top and write on that, it might work for what you want.
Or, it didn't occur to me before, use neon crayons maybe.
Edit: Not sure if the one I got is dimmable, I just got the board itself, it's a micro-USB connection, didn't come with a power supply or cable. I've added pics.
So even with an LED lamp right above this thing will show brighter and the teachers can see the kids writing better.
