Idea with both is to let water bead up and fall off the car, taking with it any dirt and such from the rain rather than sitting on the paint and eating thru it (acid rain).
Both are sacrificial - wears over time.

How long they last depends on your environment and car paint.

As for glossiness, which is totally separate from water beading, I still personally prefer Meguiars Gold Class liquid applied with a rotary buffer, hand buffed with a microfibre cloth.
For an average shine, this spray is fine on newer cars where the paint hasn't worn dull.

They can stick to their shill silicone spray for windshields.

Anyways, ProjectFarm on YouTube did a pretty comprehensive comparison of spray-on ceramic coatings and waxes. I'd recommend checking that out.

I doubt rain-x will last anywhere near as long as the above listed. Most people report it has weeks of lifetime. It wasn't part of the test, but you can see there are tons of products that will fail fast.
These all beat the $23 gloss it spray, $70 F11 top coat, $50 Owner price, $42 the Last Coat 2, $40 Nexgen, $40 Carpro reload, $20 Shine Armor and the $13-$15 three turtle wax applications.

They didn't test rainx, but with how many have failed I would stick to the known winners.
