It serves the purpose of letting security researchers know how widespread vulnerabilities are. If there wasn't a commonly known Shodan, there would be a Hidden Shodan only known by the bad actors.

Stop with the FUD. This is a useful tool for tons of reasons not the least of which is actual cybersecurity. A lot of businesses maintain accounts because it's good to, y'know, have a backup way of checking if anything you own is exposed to the open internet.

For home use, it's a nice way to see whether that Chinese webcam you got from a different SD last week is phoning home or exposing your feed to the world. And if you want to get fancy and start automating some checks Shodan offers a pretty neat API.

For the price of a latte this is an amazing resource.

Yes, because every business is a huge enterprise with a dedicated InfoSec team led by a CISSP.

You don't think there are smaller businesses that can make legitimate use of this? For many they do nothing and this would be better than zero.

A friend I know used to use this site (or something like it) a long time ago to access publicly accessible webcams in people's homes, businesses, etc... It was really creepy.
