A common configuration is a set of drives in NAS or PC for real time use using Raid for performance and/or continued availability with a single disk failure (or more). A large capacity external drive like this one for back up storage of the former in case of a catastrophic failure. Some rotate out the external drive to another location to always have an off-site backup. Clouds get very expensive at TB levels.
It all depends on how valuable the data you want to keep is, how irreplacable it is if lost, etc.
No one solution fits all.

I had a devastating ransomware total loss about a year ago which took out the data on my entire NAS, as well as external drives, so I'm thankful I had everything fully backed up on the cloud as well. They will even mail you drives to make restoring easy as a free service, less return postage. Drives kept in off site cold storage would not have been up to date.
