While the musical touches on themes of racism, fascism, and oppression, it's all packed behind family friendly musical numbers. Also in the musical the witch is Disney good, meaning she's only a target because she loudly speaks truth to power and maybe does some things to help the oppressed. The book features all of those dark themes, unvarnished, at the forefront and throws in colonization and sexual exploitation as well. The witch also engages in acts of violence in her struggle, and the Wizard is no longer a "corn fed hick", but a dark, powerful, and malevolent individual with a personality to match the evil of his regime. Definitely not for Littles.

If you haven't already read wicked I would check out some reviews to make sure it's what you're looking for. It is pretty dark and if it were made into a movie as-is it would probably be rated R.

Wicked is a very nice book but it's about as adult as they come.

It's sad and cruel and introspective, full of dark politics and bad religion, and contains death and beastiality and failure. I haven't seen the musical, but I would be surprised if it were anything like the book.

I'll second this. Wicked wasn't really my thing, my buddy loves it tho so i went to see it live with him and was sorta surprised how dark it was😯 it was a good show though too!

The book is (always) richer and more detailed, so crank that darkness level up from the musical.

My family is about to go on a road trip and my family includes a 9-year old and a 6-year old. Is this one ok for kids? Loved the musical - was so clever, but it's been many years so I don't remember.
