the M1 mac mini can support dual displays natively
but the MBA and 13" MBP only support a single display natively
There are workarounds though
You can use a displaylink dock to get extended displays
But why Apple didn't design for this in the M1 generation macs in the first place is puzzling to me

I just realized the specs on this thing don't mention power delivery. Anyone know if this also provides enough juice to power a MacBook Pro?

it's been great for me and my 2019 16" MBP
I have most of the ports occupied:
- running two displays (1 DP, 1 USB-C)
- Wired LAN
- USB-C to lightning (sidecar for ipad)
- 2x USB-A for accessories
- even using the SPDIF connection for a soundbar
And it still charges my computer just fine with everything open
Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a true Thunderbolt dock for their Mac
Actually, no dock (regardless how expensive is) will offer more than two external monitor for the M1 Macs (As far as I know, it is a M1 Macs limitation).

The only con with this dock is the Audio Output. It seems like it cuts half the frequencies and sounds terrible.
Everything else is perfect.
the usb docks simply don't have the bandwidth to do all the things this dock can do... usb just isn't fast enough. a lot of the usb docks cheat the display output by using software like displaylink. displaylink is fine for mainly static displays but quick movement, video, animation will make it very choppy and unusable.
I have a USB hub with a switch that is connected to my desktop and my laptop (because KVMs are garbage and they don't support high refresh rates) and when my usb hub is plugged in all other USBs plugged to the Caldigit malfunction or connect/disconnect constantly. Once I switch to my desktop, those issues go away instantly because it's not connected through the Caldigit. I don't really get why it's such an issue since it's only a keyboard, mouse and mic connected to the hub.

My best guess regarding the M1 limitations is it's basically a modified A chip from the iPads, which don't really need robust display/Thunderbolt bandwidth. I assume going forward they're build the chips out and modify to work more for actual laptop/desktop use-cases.
Edit - I missed you already said the DisplayLink part...too early for reading comprehension for me.

I'm using a new M1 MBP 13" with two old Cinema HD displays, one with StarTech Display Link adapter and it's been working great - no problems with USB 3 hubs attached to it either.
