I've had this exact unit for 6 months now. The app is well designed and allows you to block off areas that you do not want the vacuum to go to. I even put the robot vacuum in my bedroom that is 100% carpet and it handled it with no sweat even leaving behind the nice parallel vacuum lines because of the way that it cleans in an s pattern to ensure it does not miss a spot. You can also see how the robot maps out your house on the app.

S4 max was recently introduced (sep 2020). The version moniker really throws people off guard. S6 lineup is a vacuum and a mop.

We're using the S4 max for our hardwood floors and with our dog and it works really well. We've noticed that when it transitions onto area rugs, the suction does go down a bit on carpet.

The only real complaint we have is that we have to empty the darn bin after each cycle. The S7 is around the corner, with the large bins.

Its actually the same vacuum as the S6 Pure with different tuning and no mop attachment. Same with the S5 MAX.. All 3 of them are based on the Chinese P5 model. Performance does "differ" due to build and specific metrics.

The S6 is a "revised" and upgraded version of the original S5/S50 for clarification. The S6 and S6 pure only share the name.

Keep the S4 Max. From what I've read, the hardware is identical between the two units.
Like above, they're both based on the Chinese P5 design, but the S4 MAX is tuned for higher flow. Doesn't matter that much unless you want to save a few bucks. S4 MAX also comes with an extra filter.

This looks very good. Roomba says hair doesn't get tangled in their brush. Do you have to clean the bristles often with this.Need it for the dog hair, so may have to run it everyday. Not looking forward to emptying it everyday. The Costco Roomba i8+ for $320 more looks tempting. Bed bath has i7+ for $799, with 20% off will come to $639, which is only $220 more.
639 is 319 more than 320, so almost exactly double the price

For someone who has never bought a robot vacuum and lives in an apartment with carpet and hardwood and no pets, would this be a good starting robot vacuum?

Get the S4 Max for 320 or less on sale.. "Mopping" is a pointless feature..

The only gripe I have with the S6 Pure is that it doesn't come with an extra filter which is nice to have when rotating between washes. The mopping attachment also isn't "active" like other premium models which allow you to use "no mop zones". S6 Pure does not have the water tank sensor.

The cheaper S4 MAX is legitimately the same robot without the mopping attachment. Its also tuned a little higher for better flow which helps performance on lower settings.

If you need mopping, I'd recommend the S5 MAX variation but this also has no second filter. All 3 are similar electronics, but the S5 MAX has added features taken from the Chinese T7. Its a hybrid of an entry (P5) and higher end model.

Alternatively, the regular S6 (known as T6 in china) is more of a premium build and feature set. Has all the bells and whistles, 2nd filter, no mop zones, bigger 480ml bin, 2 pads, dry pads etc..

The only problem with this model is that its a bit older and likely isn't getting updated like the others.

I just bought the S4 Max yesterday for $315. Any reason to send it back and get this one instead?
Where did you pick this up for $315? Thanks

I'm curious if the S7 mop is actually worth a damn? All the early reviews are too biased to be real life reviews.

Thanks. That seems to be what I'm seeing, too. In truth. I think I'd prefer to wet mop my own floor when needed. Really just trying to get the dog hair off of dark floors.
Good idea the mop function on these is a joke might as well have a kid drag around a damp towel and it will do the same job.

If it can't go down the stairs, I'm not interested. I can bring it back up when it's done, np

Not to sound like a shill, but the Wyze vaccum @$250 > every sub $400 lidar vacuum.
Identical hardware, with better software and consistent performance updates
I was about to post something similar. You can't beat the lidar and this vac looks about the same as Wyze, besides the lidar placement.

Wyze does not support multiple floors, or have mop. So this is a better deal if those features are important

How is this compared to a (Costco version) Roomba i4 (I don't need the mopping feature, just the vacuum and mapping)
Get this. I actually got the i4 first and it does get your carpets a bit cleaner, but got stuck on the low metal feet of my chairs and even on thresholds. The i4 also maps and only runs through the whole house. This machine does multiple floors, and you can even select individual rooms or send it to spot clean.

I don't think any brand comes close to the quality of Roborock. I have tried 4 different brands and they all fall short of what these are capable of.
