Just comparing scratch resistance, it's worth noting that the Hardlex is substantially better than standard mineral glass.

Mineral glass is about a 5 on the Mohs scale, Hardlex is around an 8. A sapphire watch crystal would be about a 9 and diamond is a 10.

Also, supposedly these Seiko 5 Divers have a lot of overlap with the more popular Seiko mod parts, so it should be possible to swap in an aftermarket sapphire crystal if this hardlex ever gets too banged up.

Great watch but the fit and finish flaws are sometimes visible. For example, the rotating bezel on mine does not hit 12 o'clock or any of the hour hands exactly.

All seiko's suffer from qc issues like that except grand seiko and maybe some of the high end divers

Okay price, down another $20 and it'd be officially hot.

BTW, bought a Seiko 5 from Macy's last April. Shipped from SeikoUSA, not Macys.

Classic Seiko, but Seiko fit and finish QC issues are so prevalent in the mid-tier watches like this one it's not with the dice roll. There's just no excuse for it.

FWIW, the bezel insert can very easily be removed and put back with correct alignment.

Beautiful watch, OK price, but too large for me.

Macy's has some great deals sometimes. I picked up a Citizen NB1031-53L for ~$400ish a couple years back and it's one of my favorite watches. Such a gorgeous blue...

Fair point, but for those who don't know, grand seikos cost about 10x normal seikos so they shouldn't have QC issues

Great watch. As far as Seiko's QC issues in this price range... to be clear, we are almost exclusively talking about cosmetic issues. Not defending them. Just stating the problem.

From a seller like Macy's, I actually would "roll the dice." Unless Macy's has some kind of strict no-return policy on watches.

Aside from all that, this is an absolutely killer watch for the money IMO. I have it in a different color and I'm very happy with it.
