Two best routes in the US are LA-SEA on the Coast Starlight [singleflyer.com] and CA-Chicago on the California Zephyr [singleflyer.com].

Coast Starlight gets you some fantastic views of the coast especially in the summer.

https://singleflyer.com/2018/09/0...o-seattle/

California Zephyr has some fantastic scenery as you climb over the Rockies in Colorado. If you are doing it just for the views; I would suggest Emeryville (CA) to Omaha. The last portion from Omaha to Chicago is pretty boring but all the rest is great.

Here is some info on the dining car, though it may have changed with COVID.

I'd love to jump in as I did this a couple years ago! I traveled by myself from IL to CA which took 2.5 days. While, yes, I could've taken a plane, it was about the experience. Before I boarded I was able to be at the exclusive lounge that had various sodas/coffees and snacks for free. Then when I boarded we were given the front of the train with their train security making sure that people that were from the other carts didn't cross our area. The beds were cozy and I'm 6'5" so length wasn't an issue, we also had ac/heating available which was nice during the winter days. We had full access to private toilets/showers/juices/coffees on our trip.

They had our assistant that would come in our room and do our beds everyday and ask what we wanted for breakfast/lunch/dinner. When we sat down, we were grouped with up to 3 other people and some of them were fun travelers like myself, others were Amish, where we all talked about our trips/life stories as we dined over surf/turf every night (at least that's what I ate). The cost of food ranges from $30-40 and our dinner would include a salad, entree + dessert + unlimited soft drinks. But of course it's all included but I'm giving an estimate if you didn't have a roommette. I'll admit I like to keep to myself but this 'forced' me to be talkative and learn to interact in a world where we ignore others when we put our headphones on, so it was refreshing and made some contacts in the end.

Every morning I woke up around 6:30/7am to watch the sun rise as our train sped past areas cars couldn't go to. We had the main cabin where they had windows to the ceiling so you could gaze at the sky at night. It was great to sit down, draw, listen to music as you traveled. Now I will say if you don't have a tablet or book it can be a bit boring as there's not much else to do. We made our typical stops where people got on and some left, but we were able to get some fresh air and get some souvenirs along the way.

I wouldn't say it's a trip I would take all the time, but a little splurge on yourself to see the country, why not? Smilie

The Coast Starlight route from LA to Seattle (or Portland) is amazing! HIGHLY Recommend! Also, when you book ask for the Coast side! Bring cards or games as it can be a little boring sometimes but it is super fun to do in a roomette! Also, you will get great photos! Try to time your dining with coastal stretches if you do not get a coast side roomette!

Also FWIW, when I went you had a private bar car that hosted wine tastings of the various regions you passed through. And by tastings, it was basically all the wine you could drink from SLO, Napa, Sonoma, Oregon and Washington in a private window car going through some amazing scenery! COVID has probably killed that perk, but maybe not...

If you are vaccinated and want to do this route for a vacation and then fly back you should...

wouldnt it just be easier to fly? about the same price and get you to your location in 3 hours instead of 20

the only benefit i see is banging your wife or girlfriend on the train in a private room =)
that's exactly what I was thinking. might do a 1 way ticket, then fly back.

Is there no way to browse by fares? I'm not that picky on date.

I'm curious about this as well. Can't find the DEN > SLC rooms for less than about $450 each way. Might be a fun experience if the price is right.

I want to like this but the cost is so high. Round-trip Non-stop from Portland to Burbank is 350 for two people. Amtrak is 840 plus tax.
So 26 hours longer for nearly triple the cost. Hard to justify as a slick deal personally.

It doesn't seem like the promo is getting applied, even though I started the process from the promo landing page. Can't find where to enter a promo code. Says the total for a round trip from MN -> MT for two people is $1,329 but I have no idea if that's the price with the promotion or not. Crappy user experience, good luck to anyone trying to get in on this.

edit - redid the process adding one traveler instead of two and it was the same price, so the discount is getting applied even though it didn't specify it anywhere I could see

"Lorton – Sanford $296* (plus cost of car on Auto Train)"

do we have to use the auto train option for this one? Sanford depot is about 10 minutes from me, and I hadn't heard of Lorton but northern VA close to Baltimore.

Another over priced mode of travel subsidized by American tax payers so corporate America can have reduced fares.
Sooo is it overpriced or do they offer cheap fares? Not sure what you were trying to say.

I got the email for this yesterday, and tried to talk my wife into it. She has severe arthritis, and thinks it would end up being too uncomfortable, and she is probably right. That and having to share a bathroom. Awesome deal though. Round trip from central Illinois to west coast and back was around $650. That includes 4 overnights and meals if I read it correctly.

Will probably do car instead since we can stop anytime and anywhere along the way. This is all contingent on endpoints being open and she being 2 weeks past second vaccination. We may try a tentative quickie weekend in St Louis or Chicago in July just to see how things go without committing to a week long jaunt elsewhere.
Just wanna say the slog through the midwest is pretty snoozefest when driving; highly recommend heading through on I-90 if you have the time. Way, way prettier. Only other part I think was nice was I-70 west of Denver and southern Utah.

Over priced and still subsidized for people on the east coast that commute. What do you expect? It's government run.

I am thinking of doing this route for our wedding anniversary in early September. Thanks for all the tips! We live in the Phoenix AZ area which does not have an Amtrak station which is annoying. So I am considering doing a one-way flight to LA, taking the train to Portland, and then a one-way flight back home. A lot of work and money but my wife really wants to experience the coastal train at some point. How do you request a Coast ride roomette?? I cannot find the option online?

What is the cancellation policy on these particular tickets? Are they considered "Value" which you need to cancel within 24 hours of booking to not incur a cancellation fee?

Have done the Coast Starlight. Very highly recommended at least as a once-in-a-lifetime trip. With one small kid or 2 very young ones, a single roomette is doable. It does take a long time, but that's the point. I recommend aiming for a full moon. The food is not terrible and that apple pie à la mode while gliding through gorgeous scenery is a classic Americana memory for me.

Yes. As someone who loves public transit amtrak is awful and this deal reminded me of that. We are planning a chi-no trip and thinking this could be a fun drunken ride but it's 20hrs+ and the website is still awful. It will cost a third as much (with the discount) to just fly and we'll get there in 3hrs.

It was more fun to be stuck in ohare for 24hrs than it was to travel from oakland to denver on amtrak.
