for the last time, mulches are sourced regionally even the bagged kind. Lowes, HD, etc get it from the same processor that "by the yard" use. If in your region construction debris is used, then you odds are very high you will run into it at any source
Ha, I say that about Home Depot. I much prefer Lowe's. But that's because our local Home Depot seems to be from 1972 and the Lowe's is much newer.
I get that, but the price is so much higher for bulk delivered mulch.

1 yard = 27 cu. ft = approx. 14 bags
14 bags with this deal = $28
1 yard bulk delivered = $55

I can get it down to $46/yard if I order 4 yards but that's still way more expensive, and how long will that pile be blocking my driveway?

Emptied all my mulch and was good. The black mulch weathered a bit but still ok. It's dye. Just add more.

The Lowes deal is better same price but instead of 1.5 Cubic Feet Lowes gives you 2 cubic feet for the same price

So after trying three different types of mulch I got a quote from a local landscape supply, $175 to have 6 yards delivered to my driveway. Ended up being the same if I would buy the bags in bulk and rent a truck to bring to to my house.
But the best part is the quality of the mulch. No barn smell, no random junk, just fresh black mulch delivered to my driveway. Have the gorilla hand truck and that really helped transport the mulch to the back yard.
Used half the mulch already and looks like I will have plenty left for the neighbors to have their pick.
As few stated earlier, try local. You will not only support local businesses but will get better quality mulch than the box store.

That's a deal. I was quoted ~2x that for 6 yards of black mulch.

My local Home Depot has mountains of the 1.5 cf Scotts mulch in the parking lot, but they hide the 2 cf Vigoro bags in the back corner of the garden center like they don't want you to know that it exists. So far I've bought about 50 bags of Vigoro, but it's a really pain in the rear to wheel it around the store to the checkout lane.

Bought 6 bags of this to spread in the back corner of my backyard where the utility box is. Saw the bad reviews on HD site, so I'm not hopeful that it'll last very long. Will need more for the front yard though... fingers crossed!

Nope.

I have that shovel actually.... that exact shovel. Shovels are horrible for mulch unless you can scoop out of a flat, smooth-bottomed metal container like the bed of a truck. Mulch is not something you can shovel like snow or dirt - you're going to be killing yourself doing that. Using a fork is MUCH more efficient.

Of course, when it comes down to cleaning up an area - e.g. a tarp if you've dumped it on your lawn, or a driveway or whatnot, a big, light-ended shovel will work - even a snow shovel will work. for the bulk of the work you'll want a fork though., This guy shows how much better a fork will be [youtube.com].
I have a pitchfork from an estate sale and never really knew why I'd need it. Thanks for the education and helping me justify holding on to another tool.

Well your paying for the labor. Around here IF you can get a place to quote spreading, it usually more than doubles the price. The problem? No one wants to do the mindless manual labor involved in spreading. Also around here mulch is $40+/yd plus a $30-40 delivery charge up to 10 yes so 4 yd would be on the order of $200 delivered, so I'd say your price is right in line with that.

Try a different home depot if there is another near you. The home depot in Auburn NY has the mulch in the back corner of the garden section, I had to load it onto a cart and take it to the register, but the home depot in Camillus NY is completely different during these sales. At the Camillus location you pay for the bags at the garden center then pull your car up the pallets of mulch in the parking lot. They have no less than 2 dedicated employees out there all day that will check your receipt and load the mulch right into your car.

I've stopped doing the loading myself. You have to wait a bit but I just take a picture of the barcode, and have them ring it up and load it I don't even push it to the register anymore.

I deeply regret not using a fork when I spread mine, even though I should have known better because my mom used the fork for it as well.
