For over a decade (maybe closer to two) I installed Malwarebytes (free version) as a secondary scanner to run monthly but a few months ago I uninstalled it - very frequent taskbar reminders (or pop-ups - I can't remember which) were a big distraction. Hopefully not an issue on the paid version.

Maybe it sounds like I'm being ungrateful so I'll throw a pitch in its favor - for browser redirects to malicious websites it does a far, far better job of protection than Microsoft Defender. A few years ago browser redirects were a common occurrence on Slickdeals:

It was so bad and ignored for so long that I stopped visiting for several months until they got their act together
I was already a customer but my license was due to expire soon, I was able to purchase and add to my account within minutes of ordering.
I know they're never bringing back licenses that don't expire, but I'm never giving them a dollar until they do.

I usually leave it off. Seems to conflict with some applications I use.MS MSE/Defender seems to do OK, but I'm pretty careful on where I browse and what I click on.If I'm going to do something fishy, I'll turn it on, and I'll also use it to scan the computer if I think I've caught something. Got 5 lifetime licenses from newegg (thx SD), with cds, and they transfer to the newer computers.

Have a couple of lifetime licenses I got years back and assumed they were no longer valid (most software cos link lifetime licenses to a specific version number). Might have to fish out the cds and install them.

you mean you had malware on your computer, not a virus! do you even know the difference?

Having said that, McAfee isn't a great anti-virus software. Try Norton or stick to the default Windows Defender, which is free in Windows 10.

Best combination per NY Times Wirecutter: Windows Defender + Malwarebytes

NOD 32 and Malwarebytes has worked great for me over the years.

FYI - I was in a similar boat with an extra 5 lifetime licenses that I had purchased years ago on sale. Two I had never used and three were used on old PCs that got decommissioned years ago and had not been used since.

When I went to use them last year, they came back as invalid. I had to open a support case with them and they hemmed and hawed a bit, saying that they had inactivated them due to not ever being activated, or not being seen as used in so long, but they did eventually reinstate all of them and registered them to my malwarebytes account.

So if it comes back as invalid on your first attempt, you might have to go a few rounds with them but I'd say it's worth it.

Well then maybe they could sell you a copy of anti malware that they never update until you give them a dollar.

Heads up, Malwarebytes used to be my go to, I still have a lifetime license for all my computers, but they have had some seriously buggy updates and the lastest version crippled two of six of my computers where boot into Windows would be exceptionally slow and the mouse cursor would lag moving it around the screen. Disabling Malwarebytes fixed everything. This has been commonly reported and there's been no fix for those affected systems. All my builds are similar so I really have no idea why it affects some computers but not others.

Amazing program. I'm lucky enough to own some lifetime licenses. This is a great deal though considering lifetime licenses aren't a thing anymore.
