Maybe it sounds like I'm being ungrateful so I'll throw a pitch in its favor - for browser redirects to malicious websites it does a far, far better job of protection than Microsoft Defender. A few years ago browser redirects were a common occurrence on Slickdeals:

It was so bad and ignored for so long that I stopped visiting for several months until they got their act together

No idea why but it was sketchy they did that so I never used their app again.
Having said that, McAfee isn't a great anti-virus software. Try Norton or stick to the default Windows Defender, which is free in Windows 10.
Best combination per NY Times Wirecutter: Windows Defender + Malwarebytes
NOD 32 and Malwarebytes has worked great for me over the years.
When I went to use them last year, they came back as invalid. I had to open a support case with them and they hemmed and hawed a bit, saying that they had inactivated them due to not ever being activated, or not being seen as used in so long, but they did eventually reinstate all of them and registered them to my malwarebytes account.
So if it comes back as invalid on your first attempt, you might have to go a few rounds with them but I'd say it's worth it.

Well then maybe they could sell you a copy of anti malware that they never update until you give them a dollar.
