somebody help me decide between this and the Gateway with the RTX 2060 mobile that keeps going in and out of stock at Walmart for $799 please and thanks.

I want to use it for gaming. I don't necessarily need it to sit on my lap, will be using a 55" screen.

Would be nice if it took a 2.5in SSD so I can transfer from my current gaming laptop to it and not have to re-download a ton of games on Steam.

Also would be nice if it would take RAM out of a Ryzen 3500U based laptop.

New version with Ryzen 5600H and RTX3060 is coming out on May 4th for $899 so it might be better to wait.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Bought this last time with the Amex $100 off deal in Feb. It's good GPU/CPU for the price, but the thermal issues are pretty real. Enable G mode so the fans spin 100% and wear headphones because the fans are pretty loud. Temps are more reasonable with it on. Get a cooling pad or at least a stand for this thing.

Downgrade to BIOS 1.3 to get full performance out of it. Mine came with 1.5. 1.4.4 underclocks the CPU, so I was running into CPU bottlenecks in games such as Genshin Impact. Setup guide on Reddit [reddit.com]

Build quality is OK for the price. I'm used to Dell Business keyboards, so this one does not feel that great. The keys feel a bit smaller than full size and a bit closer than my Latitude e7450. But to be fair, that one is a 14" and is tenkeyless.

My LCD had some backlight glow on dark backgrounds, so a black screen doesn't look uniform. Kinda sucks, but I can live with it.

You have to be careful selecting RAM on this laptop. I bought 16GB of Mushkin DDR4 3200Mhz, but it only runs at 2666Mhz because the voltage or timings are different. It's still fast enough for me, but it's something to watch out for.

Mine had a second NVMe slot instead of a 2.5" slot, despite looking like the chassis can handle one. Could be an alternative version with a different motherboard had it. Perhaps the Intel version?

The bottom comes off as one large piece of plastic. Taking it on and off is a bit less smooth than it should be, but on the plus side everything is pretty accessible this way. I wouldn't want to open it up too often though.

I hear replacing the thermal paste will help with the temperatures, but I haven't done it yet.

So overall, performance is very good for the price if you're willing to put in some work. There are compromises at this price point, so you have to understand what you're getting into. It's not going to be perfect right out of the box.

Just a warning I own a G3, the center based hinge will break eventually. Beyond that performance is good.

Guess it's too risky to mine on this with the thermal issues.

I mine on it just fine at 35.56MH/s.
Remove the bottom cover and it sits between 82-88 memory, which can go as high as 105.
If you want to give the fans a break put a room fan on it and they rev. down like 30%.
The MSI version of this laptop allows you to turn off smartshift in the bios, this option is disabled on the dell. Smartshift prevents you from adjusting power settings, clocks and pretty much takes over for good or worse. You can mod the bios but it is a tedious process I don't yet care to attempt.

Really whish dell would stop disabling !@#$ in the bios.

They are serious indeed. And Alienware Ryzen with higher end config on April 20. The big question I'm sure will be availability, since as anyone reading this is aware, there is almost nothing with a good cpu/gpu available in the sub-1000 category right now.

Sounds like you should look into Nvidia Shield. Just Google it.

Vents on the left and right for this 5505 would of been helpful. Looks like a decent chasis.

You can't use Afterburner on the 5600m?

EDIT: Found this hack:https://www.reddit.com/r/DellG5SE..._rx_5600m/

I need a dedicated zoom machine with Hdmi out and USB port for an HD Webcam. Is this overkill? I'm not sure what's important spec wise for zoom to run optimally. Any help appreciated
