For the smaller storage size, 256gb.

No deals on 16gb ram , ram is not upgradeable but storage can connect an external SSD and move ununsed stuff there

Why even bother to make a computer with 8GB of RAM in 2021 !?
You can't add RAM.
It's obsolete right out of the box.

Because that's all you need and will likely need for many years to watch youtube, shop Amazon and check the tweets.
Entry level Chromebooks have 4GB ram and seem to function well enough.

Because 1. Very few people actually need >8gb of ram 2. Mac OS is very RAM efficient.

Chrome: I took that personally. (Starts eating the RAM.)

General question about Costco… What happens if you don't keep continuous Costco membership or cancel your membership, and you bought an appliance or something that you have problems with or need to return later when you don't have membership?

Think 8 gb of ram is bad, wait til you check out the excess of page file writes on the ssd and its life span

your thinking is obsolete, many youtuber confirmed this with 8GB is more than most people need. It also performs better than Intel computer with 16G or more memory. MacOS is so efficient with memory management, also it's architecture means data doesn't need to be double take space in memory.
I try to keep most of my computers running for 5-8 years. I have 3 late 2012 mac minis that were expandable (and are expanded) to 16GB of RAM, and they're still chugging along just fine in my homelab as ~30-watt ESXi and Docker hosts. Big Sur may run OK with 8GB right now, but it will not be enough in the future and certainly not 5-8 years from now.
