PSA: For those in states where you're considering enrolling in the utility program to save money on the thermostat, make sure you carefully read the terms and conditions on those programs. For my state and local utility (and I assume other states and utility companies) the pricing model changes, in some cases drastically, by introducing different levels of peak pricing and sometimes even direct control over your thermostat. Whether it can save you money in the long-term is possible, but just be sure you fully understand what the program entails before jumping in with both feet.

Ohio - columbia gas rebate worked - I had to contact customer service as apparently my wife's name wasn't updated after our marriage in 2015. They want exact name and address on file, not necessarily what is on your account or what is on your bill.

Also be sure to follow the compatibility checker for your selected model before purchasing- if you are unsure about checking they provide pretty simple instructions on what to do and what to look for.

All said with shipping and tax I walked away with a google nest for $37.77.

Good News Illinois people, just sign in and an instant rebate will be applied. I am not sure what will happen if you purchase it but don't install it (as per their rebate eligibility requirement), as I am planning to change the apartment in 3 months.

I have PGE in CA and qualify for $100 rebate after self install and activation. The nest basic or ecobee lite would be free after this rebate. question is... how easy are these to install for a novice?? Anyone installed this before and know the activation process?
For the pge rebate a few years ago, you need to take a photo of your old installed (non-smart) thermostat, then a photo of the new thermostat (installed turned on), and fill a form and upload photos. I uninstalled my old thermostat before finding this out but I held that against the wall and took a photo, they accepted that too.

Ecobee self install was straightforward if you are replacing a thermostat that has long enough wires in them. You do need to drill new holes since the plate shapes are different, and it takes some videos to figure out which way wires go.

Get a Nest Thermostat for $0 (Up to $129 off!) by using this hack.
If you've ever considered getting a Smart Thermostat and haven't yet due to price or other considerations, now is the time! Nest is running a $30 off promotion for Earth Day, which is great in and of itself - but more likely than not your local utility also has instant rebates on smart thermostats, which can bring the cost down as low as $0 upfront (yes - free!) plus shipping and handling and without any strings attached. I found one for my local utility last week and then did some digging and there are a ton of these!

      Virginia
      Dominion Energy

      $49 no strings attached

dominion (at least virginia) requires that you have both heat & a/c electric (or geothermal & some other list of very unique situations that aren't common)
so i don't get any discount

Question - I live in CA, but PG&E only supplies my gas (electricity is via another local provider). Will I still be eligible?
Most probably no. I use PG&E for both electricity and gas, but got denied as I have solar panel. No idea why.

Yes, I'm surprised more ppl aren't more wary of this. There are many stories of ppl having their heat/AC throttled during peak times by the energy company.

For example, this is from the T&C of PSE&G in NJ:
      INSPECTIONS
PSE&G reserves the right to inspect all rebated products to verify compliance with PSE&G Marketplace Program terms and conditions. This may include post-installation inspections or participant interviews. Upon reasonable notice by PSE&G, the Customer must allow access to the installed product for a period of four (4) years after receipt of the rebate from PSE&G.

PSE&G may participate in the PJM Capacity Market through the demand reductions achieved by the products installed as part of this Program. Customer acknowledges and agrees that, for purposes of participating in the PJM Capacity Market, PSE&G shall own the rights to all such demand reductions without cost or obligation to Customer. PSE&G's ownership of the Project's demand reductions does not affect Customer's ownership of the products nor the energy savings derived from the products.

I got two of these basic Nest thermostats for $20 each from PSEG last year and sold them on eBay soon after to fund the purchase of the top of the line Nest learning thermostat. PSEG hasn't given me any trouble and there's really no conceivable way they can control the thermostat.

I did not buy them with the intent of selling them. I just did not realize that the basic Nest thermostats don't support sensors.

      Ordered Google Nest $100 rebate.
Site says Instant Rebate but it's not really "instant"
PG&E in Norcal only lets you buy it first with CC, install it when it arrives, make sure it talks to your network or PG&E can confirm it is installed in your home address for same account, then they will send the rebate. They said the whole process could take as fast as 3-4 weeks but mainly depends on how soon you install it and get it working.

      Subtotal $100.00

      Tax $9.25
