Also be sure to follow the compatibility checker for your selected model before purchasing- if you are unsure about checking they provide pretty simple instructions on what to do and what to look for.
All said with shipping and tax I walked away with a google nest for $37.77.
Ecobee self install was straightforward if you are replacing a thermostat that has long enough wires in them. You do need to drill new holes since the plate shapes are different, and it takes some videos to figure out which way wires go.
If you've ever considered getting a Smart Thermostat and haven't yet due to price or other considerations, now is the time! Nest is running a $30 off promotion for Earth Day, which is great in and of itself - but more likely than not your local utility also has instant rebates on smart thermostats, which can bring the cost down as low as $0 upfront (yes - free!) plus shipping and handling and without any strings attached. I found one for my local utility last week and then did some digging and there are a ton of these!

For example, this is from the T&C of PSE&G in NJ:
INSPECTIONS
PSE&G reserves the right to inspect all rebated products to verify compliance with PSE&G Marketplace Program terms and conditions. This may include post-installation inspections or participant interviews. Upon reasonable notice by PSE&G, the Customer must allow access to the installed product for a period of four (4) years after receipt of the rebate from PSE&G.
PSE&G may participate in the PJM Capacity Market through the demand reductions achieved by the products installed as part of this Program. Customer acknowledges and agrees that, for purposes of participating in the PJM Capacity Market, PSE&G shall own the rights to all such demand reductions without cost or obligation to Customer. PSE&G's ownership of the Project's demand reductions does not affect Customer's ownership of the products nor the energy savings derived from the products.

I did not buy them with the intent of selling them. I just did not realize that the basic Nest thermostats don't support sensors.
Site says Instant Rebate but it's not really "instant"
PG&E in Norcal only lets you buy it first with CC, install it when it arrives, make sure it talks to your network or PG&E can confirm it is installed in your home address for same account, then they will send the rebate. They said the whole process could take as fast as 3-4 weeks but mainly depends on how soon you install it and get it working.
