History is not being taught and that is on purpose. A country of apathetic under educated citizens are easily led with little resistance. It is a very tuff to have a rational debate with shifting meanings of words. I thought when the birds go south and come back next year that was Migration.. Now I have no idea what it means when they come and never go back. Just another poll tested phrase for the script readers to pass on to the now un educated.

Tempted to buy a roll for the shelf in the garage tough, because when you print money and rescores are finite, the rescores increase value inversely to the money printed.
FWIW, I've been in the building/architecture industry for decades and seen these prices go up and down with the market demand. The prices are high right now, but it's because the commercial demand for product and choke points in the supply chain (2018 tariff-related material shortages which have depleted domestic warehouse stock, Covid-related reductions in production capacity and shipping delays).

As for history - I can assure you they are still teaching it. Most people have simply forgotten (or never bothered to learn) what they were taught. And why would they - you get paid 100x as much for being pretty and popular as you do for being smart.
Why would you buy so many short rolls? You will wind up with much more waste at the end Cost you more per foot of actual used wire.

I believe that prices are going up. I seriously doubt that construction is the cause. At least not in the US. It was just a few months ago that companies had decided that they liked people working from home as it cut down on real estate costs. With all the, now excess, buildings, I can't believe that construction is on the upswing.

I believed that story too, until I went to a lumber mill and talked to the guy there. Pine, Oak, Cherry, Walnut, and poplar are all almost double in price from last year (poplar is 95% higher). You would think there is a shortage.

He buys truckloads of wood for milling into everything from trim pieces like crown mooulding, rosettes, plinth blocks, to stock window sills and door parts. Anyway, he said before covid he would place an order and typically wait about 2-3 weeks for delivery. Now he is calling on a Friday and it is at his shop on a Tuesday. That means that they have stocks of it, not a shortage. Besides, I have gotten to know lots of loggers, a lot of loggers aren't working and no one is buying their wood. Sure some people are buying but they aren't paying anywhere near the prices they are charging.

Someone is getting over big time, I'm guessing it is the commodity traders and houses jacking the prices up. Chicago not NY, although all those thieves are intertwined. I'm no marxist. I believe in captialism, not favorrable cronyism so only a few make money..

Currently at HD and Lowes 250' are $122 (was $105 last week and about $65 6months ago), so 50'@$27 are still more unless you need shorter lengths. Not sure who's responsible for this madness but if it's due inflation then those "relief" checks soon will barely cover few 2x4s and plywood sheets if that. On that note I wonder how much "wood" sheds will skyrocket in price as well.

Most of the price in crease is due to supply and demand. Some will be due to inflation.

They're saying that lumber prices won't drop until the fall once the summer home building season is over.

I read one cite that said the increased cost of lumber alone would account for a materials increase of $24,000 for the average single family home, and that doesn't include the copper, piping, sheetrock etc. Absolutely crazy.

This is a red herring. Btw, fun fact, most of the lumber mills in the US are owned by a handful of Canadian companies.

For now it's somewhat simple supply and demand. Those selling the pine trees to the mills aren't getting any more money. The mills are the bottle neck and they discovered that they can still sell at the same rate for 2x $board/ft

There are many flaws in those arguments. Back then growth was not as well researched. German marks have never been the global currency either. USA is in the unique position of having the closest thing to a worldwide currency. That's why most countries print counterfeit US bills. We are into unknown territory, but math tells us that our debts in 10 years will stay relative to the growth of the market.

Everything else is built off the dollar either on purpose or by sheer force. Any attempt to devalue our currency will first hit the lower income countries. Guess which comes last?

If only our political leaders had access to cutting edge research and future contingency planning. Maybe both Republicans and Democrates Presidents would realize stimulus usually work out for those on the top. Then they would likely hand out checks of some kind to help people.

Seeing as the world is actually paying for it, as roughly 2/3rds of physical $100 bills are actually outside the US. It's ducking genius actually, until the world moves to another currency, the US financial system can take it, because it's the same as the world financial system.

Ps, there are more $100 bills in circulation than $1 bills. The fact is, the US just has to be the last nation standing if the worldwide financial system collapsed. Germany never had a chance in WW2. They just didn't have the juice. It was always a matter of time that other nations would have more output.

Interesting reading here. I've always regretted not understanding economics. Just didn't have have head for it, unfortunately. But make no mistake. Inflation is here, regardless what Powell says. I think Powell is staying low key until he's securely staying in his position. Inflation is already showing itself. I don't know if lumber is the cause or effect of inflation. I sorta see it as both! No, I don't know economics, so that's an uneducated shot. But inflation is here, make no mistake. Stimulus checks and bonus unemployment checks made little sense to me. But it doesn't come out or our political leader's pockets. It comes out of our pockets! Politicians have little interest in the effects of financial mishandling. They'll be long gone when the crap hits the fan. A politician's only focus, is to keep that job! Say anything, do anything, just keep their gig! Politicians are the scum of our earth.

Bingo. I see their press conferences and they are making situational-based excuses for why the inflation is here. At this point, it's hit so many sectors we are beyond industry-specific anecdotes for why prices are as high as they are.

Even if it's Covid-specific, if the Covid-specific impact will have lasting impacts (ie reduced productivity due to Covid measures which will become near-permanent in some way going forward), unless productivity can increase in other ways if economic demand doesn't waiver then we will have inflation. Up until the Covid, the average consumer has largely been sheltered from inflation unless they were of college age and paying for higher education or they were attempting to buy a real asset (ie a home). Most production of consumer-items has been moved overseas where the cost of labor is a fraction of what it is here and the production productivity is through the roof due to lack of regulations, environmental, etc. Any permanent disruptions to the global supply chain though and boom, all hell breaks loose if productivity cannot recover and demand remains strong or increases due to stimulus checks.

It will be interesting to see how real estate plays out over the next 2 yrs. I am still looking at deals with numbers that make sense, but a part of me wants to just sit this one out and keep building a warchest
