If you have any doubts here is a 10-12 hour demo available on all three major console platforms and PC. You can basically try the huge opener for the game for free and decide if its for you.

Yeah I vouch. I played DQVIII didn't like it. Tried V and VI, decent at best. Kind of gave up on DQ but all the reviews resulted in my reluctantly giving this a try. No regrets, it was incredible.
Story was not engaging. Battles were repetitive with one mechanics.

i think the final act was unnecessary and really drags the game down. i became tired of the same re skinned enemies. i enjoyed it overall but it could have been better
