I am one who buys refrigerator without ice or water. It is more things to go wrong and I rarely use it. For water, I have a reverse osmosis system and that is where I get my water. If I want cold water, I have a water dispenser that cools the water. For ice, I use the regular ice tray due to how little I use ice in anything we cook, eta, or drink. Also ice maker takes up a huge portion of the refrigerator. So yes there are people out there who don't want or need ice or water on the door.

I used to think this way, but in the last 5 years I've had to pay $250 in parts to fix the ice dispenser flapper and the water inlet valve behind the fridge. The latter, I was lucky to be home and notice the issue before it destroyed my floor. When I do a planned kitchen remodel I'm planning on putting an RO system in the basement and plumb in a separate water dispenser. This will open up a lot more space in the fridge too. The water dispenser is a simple connection that generally doesn't fail.

Haven't decided what to do re: ice. Might be putting in a small dedicated ice maker.

The largest failure point of any refrigerator is the water/ice dispenser cause they actually have to break the door and its thermal layer casing to install the dispenser. After they install the dispenser than they have to insulate it again to make sure temperatures hold properly, but this usually fails over time. If you google failure points of a refrigerator not counting Samsung and LG which are mini computers so everything can short out on those, dispensers are the biggest problem causer.

Yeah I was like you once, but now any future purchases will be dispenser free. The ice maker can be on the inside of the machine, opening the door to get it is not a big deal.

Or just get a fridge that has the ice maker on the inside.

There are a lot of people who do not like ice. Not kidding. They drink warm coke, water, "iced" tea. I am not one of them. If my door dispenser breaks, I hate having to open the door to get my ice.

You're not really getting the downsides I listed for not having it integrated into the fridge...

A built in ice dispenser is a lot more reliable than one connected with the front door dispenser as that causes the failure points such as water line freezing cause of temperature shifts.

So I get what your saying, just letting you know that built in ice makers are not as prone to failure as those connected with the door.

The ice and water dispenser in a refrigerator just attracts mold. Refrigerator water filters are a joke anyway, RO is the only way to go.

Need more space in fridge for foods, but fridge's space in kitchen is limited. We also have cold/hot water dispenser that uses multiple water filter, which is better than a single filter that fridges used. Idk why, but it taste more fresh than the water from fridge. We compared it after the water returned to room temp.

We don't drink soda/beer on daily basis and hardly use any ice chips unless we have a party.

FYI: The downside about having side by side fridge is not enough space for the freezer. You cannot store wide frozen foods such as pizza, lasagna, ice cream cake, etc. You have to cut and resize several frozen foods accordingly if they cannot be tilted. It's a bummer, but that's what we learned after switching from french-door fridge to side-by-side fridge.

Do you buy mineral drops for water or just drink straight after RO (maybe even with calcium added)?
