Seagate Expansion 14TB USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive

These are shuckable and will have CMR drives vs SMR drives (Seagate CMR vs SMR link [seagate.com] - CMR is preferable). They are likely to be Barracuda Pro, IronWolf, IronWolf Pro, or Exos drives inside. I ordered one from the last frontpage deal and it is an Exos x16 ST14000NM001G [seagate.com] drive inside.

This is at $14.29/TB which is below the typical '$15/TB good deal' for one of these hard drives.

Specs:
  • Interface: USB 3.0
  • Form Factor: 3.5"
  • Dimensions: 4.75" x 1.44" x 6.93"
Includes:
  • Seagate Expansion drive
  • 4-foot (120cm) USB 3.0 cable
  • Power Adapter
  • Quick start guide

In general, I would say yes. Even if you use the same drives, it's best to source them from different vendors as well. Whether or not you trust Seagate vs WD is another story. I'm fine with either and run both in my NAS (Qnap). In the end, ALL drives will fail, it's just a matter of time. I recommend a local backup and cloud backup of all important information (three total copies).

IronWolf and IronWolf Pros are possible. It seems that most of them in the last FP deal were Exos x16 ST14000NM001G drives. That does not guarantee these will be the same.
In for 4, hard drives about to become unobtanium.
Umm no it wasn't... Smilie EDFZ drives are from Western Digital. This is a Seagate drive.

Is mixing WD & Seagate drives in a nas a good idea to reduce chances of multiple drive failures/data loss?

I got a bunch of these last time, they're Exos x16 inside. Enterprise SATA helium filled drives. They're pretty noisy but they're quick.

Thanks, been hoping for a better deal but this is the best $/TB I've seen in a while and naturally worried they're going to be harder to come by at some point.

Good deal, but too bad, wrong brand. I need WD
After the whole WD Red SMR debacle, I'm not feeling particularly brand loyal.

Backblaze report on hard drives for reference: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ba...-for-2020/

Seems like no real stinkers among recent high capacity HDDs in their latest report, and that includes ST14000NM001G. I would still prefer a 5400rpm drive for home use, but the price is solid.
