Check the serial number for manufacturing date before purchase. It will stop working 10 years from that date. The date code is in the middle of the serial number after the letters. The first 2 digit is the week of the year followed by the 2 digit year code.

They are programmed to be disabled in 10 years from the manufacturer. All CO detectors have a cumulative sensor that only lasts so long. 10 years is the longest I have seen for a CO detector, but many don't start until they are purchase and are activated by the owner.

To #1, just because nobody is home doesn't mean you want your house and everything in it to be destroyed. What if there is a pet or someone who may trapped in the home?

Most smoke detectors and all CO detectors have a limited useful life due to sensors that degrade over time. Google decided to make them stop exactly at 10 years as a way to give warning that it's going to stop working prior to the sensor degrading too much.

I was set on buying a couple of these, but then Google added a feature to Google home devices that alerts your phone when it hears any old fashion smoke/CO detector. For my purposes, that's all i need

It can tell you which room the smoke/fire is coming from. This might be helpful so you know where to exit out of and not head the way of the fire/smoke. Probably not a big deal for small home but maybe helpful for a large home with quite a few exits.You name the sensors and it will say the name of sensor that sensed the smoke/fire through the speaker of the other sensors.

You can test and turn of the sound if they go off by mistake through the app. This can be helpful for people with tall ceilings.

If you have a Nest thermostat these can signal to your A/C unit to stop running to not help spread the fire.

You can obviously live without this features but that's pretty much any smart device, you don't really need it.

It's because the way every smoke detector works is by a small amount of radioactive material. It emits ions in a stream to a detector. If particles (like smoke) blocks this stream of ions it goes off. The radioactive material will decay to the point where the detector won't work anymore even with new batteries.

Yes. Not date first plugged in like other units that suggest a life span of 7 or 10 years. 10 years after it was manufactured the light turns yellow and it shuts down.

Fantastic price if you can find them. I retrofit my entire house (6 detectors) with them when they were $60 and have been completely happy.
