For those who have a Costco membership and are considering this item, I highly recommend the Massimo e-coolers that they sell. I've had the 42 quart version for two years now and I use it frequently on camping trips without any issues. For the first year I used it as a spare fridge, running it pretty much non-stop.

Temperature regulation, no need for consumables, no water leak chance, no wet food, etc. Want me to keep going?

Just unplug your fridge and fill with ice...you'll see why

I've seen a few comments/reviews saying that it can run off solar. How does that work? Do you need to have a GoLabs or Jackery to run in conjunction with the solar panel? Or is there a direct solar connection?
I don't know about running this off directly with solar, but you can pair this up with a GoLab as it does offer passthrough charging.

I got this little thing https://smile.amazon.com/gp/produ...UTF8&psc=1
Combined with a Paxcess 120w solar panel, I never have to use electricity to charge it.
I want to do the same setup and maybe 2 in my van. Can you give any feedback on how loud it is? Plan would be to put it under a platform bed and looking at this or an iceco for twice the $. Would it wake you up several times a night? Thank you.

I have something similar to this. This isn't a fridge like this item but it's cheap and it will keep cold stuff cold while driving to somewhere. Or just stick waters in here and you can have very cold water whenever you get to destination or while your leaving. I don't need a fridge like this item but this is super useful and maybe others can get this

So we pretty much highjacked OP's post with Massimos and advantage of these over ice coolers?

Just ordered a CX50. I'm feeding everyone ice-cream on the next camping trip

Search on r/vandwellers and have all your questions answered, and more!

But to summarize, you are highly overestimating how much energy a good fridge uses.

Also, you know you can put ice in a fridge if you need to? Have you heard of Ziploc?

Depends what kind of sleeper you are. I'm a pretty heavy sleeper so the compressor never wakes me up. However, when I'm initially lying in bed and it turns on, I can certainly hear it clearly. To me, it's just some white noise.

If it works for you that's fantastic. Few thoughts, with my van I plan to be out with up to six people between the bed and the ikamper and a small wet cooler won't cut it and will regularly be away from ice for more than 4 days. I don't trust ziploc. I use large snapware tubs in the wet cooler.

I wouldn't consider it loud, but if course it's going to depend on how heavy of a sleeper you are. You can always get it from Costco and return it if it doesn't suit your needs. Another note, the cooler is definitely not the best in retaining its temperature. So outside temp will also determine how often it kicks on.

I bought 2 with this in mind. My buddy has the iceco 45L and we're going to do a side by side test. He says he sleeps next to his and can't hear it. thinking 2x 110w panels on roof feeding costco group 27/31 deep cycle feeding power station will cover all my needs and then some for reasonable $

NevalostSo 3 dollar bag of ice every 4 days will cost you 273 dollars every year.plus you have to go drive somewhere to buy it. And you have to keep wasting ziploc bags. Then there's the constant reshuffling of contents as you drain the melted ice and add more. Coolers didn't work for me.
That's even before considering that the Yeti was probably comparable in price. Usable space is probably doubled without the ice, but you could just as easily add ice to the fridge to lower power drain or whenever you were out of power. Temperature consistency would be better, as well as being able to set a specific temperature if you were keeping anything sensitive.

The portability of the Yeti and convenience of placement is probably the main reasons you'd need to reconcile.

i run mine off solar using a 100w solar kit (the suitcase type) but you can use any solar panel set. you also will need a battery, i use a 100Ah battery. you could probably make this work with a jackery but those things are rip offs. let me know if you have more questions.

i do a lot of 4wd/camping and this is fantastic. i have the costco version.
