For those who have a Costco membership and are considering this item, I highly recommend the Massimo e-coolers that they sell. I've had the 42 quart version for two years now and I use it frequently on camping trips without any issues. For the first year I used it as a spare fridge, running it pretty much non-stop.

Temperature regulation, no need for consumables, no water leak chance, no wet food, etc. Want me to keep going?

all you ice cream addicts-- be advised that this unit sucks a ton of power if you actually set it to the freezing mode. unless it's plugged into the wall, it will quickly eat up your battery unless you have like 200-300Ah.

on the fridge mode with a full charge, my 100aH AGM battery can easily get the fridge through the night.

it's a great unit. the costco one has a drain plug on the bottom for easy cleaning. not sure if this one has it. this unit does put out some condensation-- on a warm day, if the unit is in my car with the windows up, the windows will eventually fog up.

as far as costco return policy concerned, this is a small enough fridge that it qualifies for their "lifetime" return policy. i would buy it from costco for this reason.

These typically run between 35-45 watts when compressor is on. I've found that typically it runs down my 105 amp hour battery approx 8% at night. They consume very little energy.

Is this a legit compressor or absorption style or a cheap garbage electric cooler?

Combined with a Paxcess 120w solar panel, I never have to use electricity to charge it.

Wonder how "rugged" or sturdy it is. I was considering the ARB cooler since my truck goes off roaring once in a while

Why not just use a cooler with ice
To add to what others have said, another problem with ice is that as it melts its cooling capacity gets transformed into the water. So if you dump the water while there's still ice in it (if there's ice, the water is 32 F), you're throwing away about 20% of the cooling capacity of the original ice. Unless you can replenish the ice frequently, you want to keep the water. Which means you're usually dealing with a cooler with a bunch of water sloshing around inside. It may not be much of a problem on a picnic. But in a car or on a boat which is moving around, it's gonna get the contents wet. (My sister uses ice packs instead of ice to avoid the water problem, but I can't imagine devoting enough freezer space to chill that many ice packs.)

Quote from newell74 :
Ice melts. I can go dry camping in the middle of nowhere and with this and my solar panel all my food stays cold. Youre allso able to pack more stuff if you don't need to account for the ice. Stuff doesn't get soggy. Plus it freezes too so you can bring ice cream.
Actually, you can get ice below freezing temp. Just mix a bunch of salt in with the ice. The salt lowers the freezing point of water - the more salt, the colder it gets. So the ice (which usually starts at 32 F) will melt when you add the salt. But the melting process absorbs heat and the resulting brine water can be anywhere from about 30 F all the way down to -6 F, and capable of keeping ice cream frozen.

In fact this is one of the ways you can make homemade ice cream, without using a self-powered mixer designed to operate inside a freezer.

Again, I wouldn't consider this ideal because of the entire water on your food problem (salt water makes it worse). But if you need below-freezing temps without power, this is an option.
