Theyve had this refurbish before for under $100 sometimes and I picked it up last time. Works great and I've been using it as a second monitor with a MacBook pro for wfh since this year started.

You don't need a thunderbolt port exactly. Just a USB c that has displayport alt mode.

Lots of warnings in the Amazon ratings that this will only work directly connected to a ThunderBolt port. Adapters apparently do not work.

And now, for a Slickdeals throwback:

"No HDMI"

This seems like a good price in general, but the fact that there is no HDMI means you have to get an adapter if you want to use it with the Switch dock or other devices.

Is it me or did the external monitors that shipped maybe 2-5 years ago come with a battery built in? That seems like it would be a worthwhile feature for a portable monitor.

Nah, most don't have that. Many including this one pull it from the source (USB c) or you can plug it in. I have this one and it'd handy in a pinch.

Yeah, too bad my work PC used to work on USB C but after a win 10 update I need to install drivers for alt mode and they're very strict on software.

BTW, where did you pick it up for 100?

I would love for the Asus to go back to $99 ... mad I didn't jump on that one months ago ... feel like this deal happens more commonly though?

FYI the Pixio PX160 is the same price (w/ $10 coupon). Dual C instead of C/micro.

I don't suppose anyone could recommend a hub that could duplicate(actually triplicate) both video and power to three of these monitors for use in the van?

Is it my post COVID brain or you can't really call something portable if it requires a supplemental power source?

I've owned this since work from home March 2020. It's been working great with my Lenovo Thinkpad. The only issue is it won't wake on its own after the laptop goes to sleep. A simple plug out/in from USBC wakes the monitor. It's rare my laptop goes to sleep but when it does I do have to do this to turn the monitor back on.

The "supplemental power" part for sure. I've tried out a portable monitors with a variety of devices:
  • Surface Pro 7/X1 Carbon: USB-C 3.1 cable required that supports video but the monitor will draw power from source device
  • Samsung S21+: Only mirror mode with USB-C cable. If I want DEX, I need a separate power supply. Although the LePow brand will also power the monitor and charge phone
  • Nintendo Switch: I've gotten it to work BUT it needs a separate power supply
I don't have a power bank that has decent output to try but there are a few on Reddit that have gotten it to work. Built in battery would be nice but then price and size/weight increase with it. But then you have a whole mess of cables to deal with.

I have this and, while it's been great for MacBooks, I get annoyed that I can't plug my spare raspberry pi's or other random hdmi devices to it.

Worth it, as long as you know what you're getting.

Any recommendations for a cheap option that would work with pis?
