Uber has done the same. Like always. They pass on the costs to us consumers. They were the ones who spent all that money on ads to pass the bill and we end up paying for it.
Pretty sure these fees are most commonly a response to local ordinances capping the service fees that delivery services can charge restaurants, who are understandably upset by what they see as overreaching in a dire economic climate. Some delivery companies are passing the fees along, others aren't.

The ones that aren't are of course the ones that have the highest service fees baked into every order. Where I am, the DoorDash service fee if you pay for a Dashpass is...5%. 10% otherwise. The lowest of the 4 major platforms regardless.

As we often see in the comments here, it's never worth bothering with facts when they get in the way of some good, old fashioned outrage. Food delivery may or may not make financial sense for a given person, depending on a variety of factors. We're lucky to have had a fairly fast vaccine rollout compared to the rest of the world, so soon everyone that elects to will have the choice to walk/bike/drive to pick up their own restaurant food and bypass all of these outrageous fees without fear of getting sick. 👍

Great post.
PSA that DD added a new unavoidable $2.50 charge on every order in California to 'cover costs due to law changes'.

I checked out for a second order using guest checkout with a different email and credit card. That worked fine.

Thanks, this will at least offset their exorbitant fees.

Doesn't seem so, at least at their wholly owned subsidiary stores in the Carolinas ("Kreeter" Groceries, formerly known as Harris Teeter Stores prior to their unfortunate merger to combat the competitive pressure of Pubix stores opening in the area a few years ago.)

A quick glance at the HT app shows no discounts on DD gift cards. Can't speak to regular Kroger stores...

Was it tried via guest checkout?
Wonder if same credit card and billing address via guest checkout will work or not...
