I have the gamer pro, which is essentially the same control panel. just without the cabinet and screen. A friend has the cabinet. The cabinet provides the arcade experience that most people are looking for, and is worth the extra cost if you have a place to put it.

It is worth getting the shims. The plastic supporting the trackball bars will break down over time and the shims will keep it working. Takes <30 minutes to install your first time. I got the shims, so I don't need to be delicate with the trackball. I prefer to not think about the controls I am using when I am playing a game. Search Sheldon Sims Shim kit if you want to know more.

As for the pinball buttons, I don't think they are necessary in this cabinet. the screen is fixed, so you can't utilize the full screen to play pinball. I am unaware of other games that might play better using the pinball buttons.

Arcade1up is going after a somewhat different audience, i.e. those who have the desire and space for a home arcade room, with each machine having its own art and controls. If you just want to play the games, on a single cabinet (with generic art), and don't want to build your own, this is one of the best options.

But even considering that distinction, Arcade1up machines are getting rather pricey compared to this, i.e. $400 MSRP for each unit, with (at most) 12 games each.

A1up have gone too far with their pricing, now it's too close to the Legends which gets you more for your money. Especially if you're modding, you only need a USB stick for the Legends, versus about $200 of parts to mod a 1up properly. It ends up being quite a difference in price!

Yeah exactly, which is why I was saying they need to step it up....$400 is ridiculous for what you get...but to each their own, some may like them...I used to have both, and the Arcade1up's looked like a child's toy if you put them side by side

I have bene happy with my purchase at the previous $500 price point. I bought the < $10 shim kit for the trackball and added on a $20ish flash drive to add on the 1k+ games that can be downloaded and easily added. The thread linked in the OP has all of the information on how to do that.
