Not sure why you are trying compare IEM with over head cans.
Proper comparison should be with other mid-level BA(Balanced Armature) IEM set as Shure, Westone or Campfire etc.
I own for some time ER4XR and trade them due to need deep insertion to achieve proper seal. Also ER4XR made in USA and ER3XR in China. Good luck with warranty issues, not the best company to deal with.
Huge difference of category there mate.
I personally don't have Fidelio x2hr. I do have a Sennheiser HD590, HE400i, Denon AHD2000, AHD1200. The biggest difference is the soundstage. You just can't compare with a moderately good open headphone with a earphone. Now I don't have a high end earphone to compare so I am strictly talking about ER2XR and ER3XR. I do like to listen to ER3XR sometimes due to its clarity and its size. When I am at work and typing? Er3xr all the way.

For Samsung Buds Plus. I haven't tried it so I can't comment. I can't imagine a BT earbud having a better sound than ER3XR tho. Now ER3XR does not have a heavy bass. It has a very tight bass with precise sound. So it really comes down to a preference. Most people would not think ER3XR has a great bass. And I think most people use BT earbuds for its ease of use rather than its sound. I have a separate BT receiver for just earphone use. I really want the days when phones had 3.5mm jacks.

And trust me, there will be nothing better than this at $70. Maybe SHP9500?

What are these really for?
I'm not sure what you're asking here. You know they're earphones from the title. What part their purpose is unclear? Not trying to be snarky, but these aren't specialized equipment.

I'll play. Are these for casual music listening or are they designed to be "flatter" In Ear Monitors, for pro audio use, ie, IEMs?

Can these be used for casual listening? All I need is good sound. I want to try if these are any better for casual listening compared to other audiophile headphones. I was trying to understand how these are different from others.

They're IEMs. Up to you and your preferences if that works for casual music listening. It does for me. They also weigh next to nothing, so they're not annoying to wear for hours at a time. Biggest issue with that is you need to let your ears air out occasionally, and these seal really really well (you will likely not hear people talking next to you with these even at low volume).

Etymotics are neutral earbuds. The Studio models (SE) are very neutral. The XRs have elevated bass, but nowhere near the levels you see in your standard earbuds. If you want something that accurately represents the music you want to listen to, these are it. For further info, Google crinacle's review on Etymotic.

I have been using ER3XR for 4 month (with 79 USD) and the sound is absolutely incredible.

There are definitely different types of "earphones". Just like shoes, they are designed slightly differently to meet different needs. Musicians vs. casual listening, for example.

The aria's have more sub bass and more treble while the midrange/vocals are near identical. I really like both, but the aria is gonna probably please more non-audiophile's who might not like how neutral etymotics sound. The etymotics fit takes a bit of getting used to as well, and some people can't adjust to it. Check crinacle.com for the graph tool to see the frequency response graph tool.

I think so. The housing is 60% the diameter of a normal earphone. They do fit really deep though.
