I have just about every DeWalt tool known to man, both corded and cordless. I own this, the 996, and the 12v Max drills. I used to use this almost all the time, only grabbing the 996 for heavy duty work.

Then I got the 12v Max tools. The drill, the driver, and the Impact. I don't touch my Atomic stuff anymore. The 12v Max line is so, so much better.

So while I do think this is a decent deal, I would recommend the 12v Max line over the Atomic line.

I have this drill, even considered getting a second when I saw this. A have a few drills at home, some Makitas (a few years old) along with one of their top end models, the Dewalt Powerdetect Drill/Driver (DCD998), and a M12 installation driver (changeable heads).

About 90% of the time this is my go-to tool for drilling and screwing, it's comfortable in my hand, relatively lightweight, small and convenient and it just works for most tasks. Last few months I've been working on a remodel at my parents home and had several of my drills are sitting out for use. This one gets grabbed the most by everyone in the family. People even wait rather than grab some of the others (though the M12 does get used too).

I think for MOST home use/projects this will more than suffice. It's probably not going to drill concrete and it might not do everything quite as fast as a top end model, but the weight savings and comfort is worth it.

The batteries ... well I have like 8 of the 1.3 amp batteries and I wish they offered just a 2 or 3 amp instead. The 1.3 are lightweight, but the 2's aren't much different in size and weight and I like being able to actually check battery drain instead of waiting til it bogs down or stops.

Am not finding a good comparison on DeWalt site. Looks like its meant for people who want/need a more compact tool for specific jobs and applications. Where a normal, chunky DeWalt drill might not fit, but the Atomic might not have enough power--The 12v Extreme looks to combine the best of both units.

Looks like the charger is 12v-20v, so that's a bonus if you already have 20v. 2.0a and 3.0a seems to be the batteries available currently. The overall tool selection is not as robust for the 12v extreme, but since this is a compact line of tools, this makes sense.

Consider where you might be doing a lot of your work that requires the tool, then decide if a more compact tool would make that work easier. Automotive and carpentry are what come to mind for me.

The atomic has more power than the 12V extreme but is slightly larger. The Dewalt 12V lineup is extremely limited right now - it only has drill/driver, hammer drill, impact driver, reciprocating saw, and impact wrench. If you compare to the Milwaukee m12 lineup its really no comparison right now, although hopefully Dewalt will be expanding in the future. The charger compatibility is a nice feature between 12/20V Dewalt.

Atomic is Max. Max just refers to the batteries.

What it means is that the batteries are really 18v, but when fully charged without a workload are 20v Max*. The asterisk points to this fine print:
* Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 20 volts. Nominal voltage is 18.

yes, anything will drill into either... strength of the drill isn't going to matter unless you're trying to cut 4'' holes.
aluminum is soft, you could damn near do that by hand with a bit.
steel, depending on the type/grade, bits are what matter and your control of the drill speed and use of lube. if you're talking about thing metal, it won't matter in the slightest, anything will do the job and you can just go full bore.

little bit more info and people will be able to give you some real advice...

They're more compact and perform better. Or at least, that's what it feels like. Some YouTube head-to-head videos seems to corroborate that as well.

And just so I'm not confusing DeWalt models (so many), by "12v Max drills" do you mean the XTREME 12-Volt Max DCD701? If so, looks like that has less power 250 UWO than this 20v atomic 350 UWO. So, curious why you say the other one is better. I'm no expert. Just here to learn and find the right thing to buy. Thanks!
