I am an elementary school teacher. 50k a year, health insurance is outrageous, (1200 or so for my family of 4) days off are nice, but work 60 hours a week during the school year.

If I didn't have my disabled veteran money to supplement my income I would not be able to do it. Not sure if these people commenting actually know what teachers make. (I'm in Texas, state makes a difference)

Teacher pay is garbage. I am getting my masters and moving into administration. More money, half the work, gonna be great.

This is a very common misconception--teachers are *not* paid for the summer. Teachers are paid only for the working days of their contract (180+ or - a few days depending on the district).

Most teachers choose to spread their paychecks out to be received over the summer, but they are technically only being paid for Sep-June.

Teachers have the option of simply receiving larger paychecks from Sep-June, and *not* getting any checks for July/August. But most choose to have their 10 paychecks divided into 12 paychecks for consistency/simplicity.

It depends on where you work. I'm a 10 year teacher (p.e.) and I make 100k a year, full benefits, and a retirement strs plan. Since I chose p.e. I work my normal work day, go home to my family and don't grade any written work. It's great! Only downside is I live in Southern Cali.

Why sign up for alerts and complain when you get alerts? People think SD has some FREE foolproof system? What an awesome post and comprehensive list. I'm not a teacher but I think this was awesome to. Repped

Because, there isn't actually any deal for the majority of the people?

Similar to when someone list Target coupon exclusions, posting such long lists for 'xxx only' deals fires false flags for the majority while only targeting a small group of people.

Yes, that's how it was in the 1980's but definitely not now, especially with $80k in dept for a $35k a year job

We are paid for only 9 months of work. Teachers opt to have that pay spread out over 12 months. I also work summer, believe it or not, to make ends meet and still have teacher responsibilities during the summer.

I work 10 hour shifts then come home and teach my kids what the teacher did not have time to because classrooms have way to many kids.

The teacher does not have time to help every kid and must teach per the contracted work lesson plans.

Teachers where I live make between $65-100k for 9 months of work. I see the them grading on weekends and responding to emails on weekends and at night.

Regardless how you feel about teachers most have Masters degrees and love what they do.

Plus every year the teacher has to renew their contract with the school. No long term deals here.
