I am an elementary school teacher. 50k a year, health insurance is outrageous, (1200 or so for my family of 4) days off are nice, but work 60 hours a week during the school year.

If I didn't have my disabled veteran money to supplement my income I would not be able to do it. Not sure if these people commenting actually know what teachers make. (I'm in Texas, state makes a difference)

Teacher pay is garbage. I am getting my masters and moving into administration. More money, half the work, gonna be great.

This is a very common misconception--teachers are *not* paid for the summer. Teachers are paid only for the working days of their contract (180+ or - a few days depending on the district).

Most teachers choose to spread their paychecks out to be received over the summer, but they are technically only being paid for Sep-June.

Teachers have the option of simply receiving larger paychecks from Sep-June, and *not* getting any checks for July/August. But most choose to have their 10 paychecks divided into 12 paychecks for consistency/simplicity.

Its not a bad list, but a number of these are just what's offered under ID.me as I was just looking at its list the other day. Many I believe were already available prior to appreciation week. Note there's bound to be limitations regarding many of the % off. Example, tried to use the Columbia 10% off on an already marked down item on its website and it just ignored the code, no feedback whatsoever. Not knocking this post as its very comprehensive but just noting where a lot of it comes from and to temper your expectations of listed discounts

I work 10 hour shifts then come home and teach my kids what the teacher did not have time to because classrooms have way to many kids.

The teacher does not have time to help every kid and must teach per the contracted work lesson plans.

Teachers where I live make between $65-100k for 9 months of work. I see the them grading on weekends and responding to emails on weekends and at night.

Regardless how you feel about teachers most have Masters degrees and love what they do.

Plus every year the teacher has to renew their contract with the school. No long term deals here.
Your school district is the exception, not the rule. Our school district has 210 day contracts and we receive two "vacation" days each year. We have 9 weeks off in the summer (unpaid), not 3 months. That is when most teachers work on license renewal. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't like it I wouldn't do it. However, in my district starting teachers make mid 30k annually, which is slightly more than minimum wage with the new $15/hr. With a required college degree and mandated license renewal, that's somewhat absurd. Plus, we are certainly allowed to not renew our contract. However, doing so eliminates any hopes of retirement as we do not have 401k plans. Instead, our pension starts after 35 years of service.

How does one use the Buffalo Wild Wings deal? Is it for dining-in only? I tried to order online but there doesn't seem to be a way to get the 20%.

(my wife is a teacher) and I can tell you the amount of burden that parents add is amazing - not only in general harassment ("why didn't you give my kid an A?!?!?!") but also in the way of IEP which is basically an official way to seek special treatment or exceptions for your kid due to some sort of "diagnosed" "disability". When 2-3 kids out of 100 have one due to genuine issues it's not such a big deal, but when 20% have one it becomes a problem. Why? IEP's include all sorts of shit that creates extra workload - like teacher needs to allow the kid unlimited time to complete an assignment or exam, teacher needs to make cheat sheets for the kid to study or use during an exam, kid can bail/has unlimited passes to guidance, etc. And that's on top of the special meetings that are routinely called to go over these kids' IEP's and such.

Wow reading the comments here confirms how screwed we are when it comes to education. The amount of disrespect teachers get is amazing. You never hear anyone mocking the hours or amount of work a doctor, lawyer, or engineer put in but for some reason it's ok to mock teachers. BTW my wife and I are both teachers and few people know how much work goes into what we do.

Sounds like those liberal-backed unions you are paying into are working hard for you.
Dude, Texas is a right to work state. There are no unions here, fool.

California is a problem, but even the CDC has recommended teachers go back into the classroom because of the extremely low risk. The teachers fought not to return. Teachers are not being forced to stay out of the classroom. Teachers are fighting to stay out.

Should have included the parents who teach their kids at home while still working and keeping their family safe. They don't have a union, full pay, benefits, lobbyist etc.

Yeah let's just pretend teachers unions all over the country didn't fight to keep teachers home even in states where the government told them to go back to work. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

DW is a teacher as well. I can echo these statements. She's had at times up to seven kids in a class of 15 with IEPs or requiring other accommodations. She's seen kids in high school that read on a 3rd grade level. She has parents that argue every grade their child receives. She has kids that don't show up for school and the parents never respond. I've watched her spend an entire weekend grading papers and planning for the next week, at the expense of time with family and friends.

Add in getting a curriculum from people with business degrees who have never stepped foot in a classroom and you have a recipe for disaster. The system she teaches in does not have a vocational program and believes every student is going to college. So there's no alternate path for kids that can't afford to, or don't want to go to college, or don't do well in a class room but flourish in a trade. Other nearby counties have programs such as HVAC, plumbing, electrician, auto repair, and things like cosmetology and culinary arts. Those kids get hands on instruction and practice so when they graduate high school they can immediately start working.

It's not a fun job. But 95% of the teachers I know love what they do.

Teaching online is not "haven't worked" ... You must not have any teacher friends or kids.
