soldered ram kills the deal
Soldered ram MAKES the deal, for ppl that are ok with 8g. 16gb version is typically $150 more, that's 1/3 the price so I would argue they are different class

these constant "8gb ram is not enough" is getting old. don't scare away people who only need to use this for work/school where they won't come close to saturating that much memory.
if you're using more than 8gb ram, it usually has to do with productivity work (specialized software), memory leak, malware, or just a ridiculous amount of chrome tabs/extensions. for productivity, you won't be using something like this long term anyway (get a desktop or mobile workstation, not a consumer grade everyday laptop).
i hope people aren't simply parroting "8gb sucks" because that's what they're told, but are actually checking their usage and figure out what's causing the high memory usage. to need more than 8gb on a consistent basis when you're not doing much on your computer is a sign of an issue, not insufficiency.

Absolutely agree. My wife literally uses her computer for presentations and emailing and 8gb is plenty for her. Great deal

Man I just bought this for $492 from the other slickdeals thread!
And yeah the soldered ram sucks but who the hell is buying this that would need more than 8gb ram? This laptop is one of the best for light users who want a nice screen, good battery life, lightweight e.g. my parents who youtube all day.
This kind've checks all the boxes, someone convince me not to buy it
What are you planning on using it for? I really like this size (14") as it is small enough for travel but large enough to be easily usable. The only thing this is "missing" if you compare it to other laptops in this price range is potentially a touchscreen. However, that is something I rarely (if ever) use for a laptop, especially one that does not "flip" into a tablet mode.
many modern laptops will come with soldered ram for form factor & power efficiency. higher end ultrabooks use the LPDDR memory that's also found in mobile devices. not to mention they can squeeze more money out of consumers by forcing them to spend more now. gone are the days where everyday laptops were 1" thick with plenty of room for memory modules, 2.5" drives, and optical drives.
