Can you explain what's wrong with the carbide sharpener? Just out of curiosity.
*Good* knives don't have to get sharpened all that often. They can last months (if treated properly) before needing an actual sharpening, with just a simple honing before each use. Carbide sharepners are also SUPER aggressive, and will rip away a decent amount of metal. They're usually only used on cheap knives.
Still within the 30 days of the previous purchase so here's hoping they'll accept my price adjustment request!
Same...never did that before, but it was surprisingly easy on their site, and it seems pretty clear that there shouldn't be any issue getting the adjustment since that last deal was well within the 30 day window!

I'm sort of a knife guy, I have chef's knives from Germany, Japan, Switzerland (Wusthof, Akaishi, Shun. Victorinox) Schmidt Brothers makes decent knives, big name in the game. I'd say if you're an amateur home chef, this is really a great deal on a knife set that can be displayed. And if you don't like it, you have Costco's return policy.
Yes, the black paint will probably come off after time though.
In response to the sharpener, yes and no. Just because a set comes with a sharpener, doesn't mean the quality is not there, most manufacturers are just trying to increase sale price by including things that most people think they need.
In the end the best way to sharpen a knife is always a sharpening stone.
It's Costco, I'd say give it a chance, and if you're disappointed, return them.
I handled the steak knives in a crate and barrel (or one of those kinda stores), felt light and cheap. Ended up getting the wusthof classic (forged) but they were around 250 for 4 steak knives.
I guess the big thing is stamped vs forged, i'm guessing these are stamped. Probably worth rolling the dice on these if you are looking for a set.
If you keep them under a wall cabinet on a countertop, vertical position would make it hard to remove longer knives (they would bump into the bottom of the wall cabinet). Also, never understood the need for transparent front. Are the blades the work of art that we are supposed to admire?

I'm more concerned that they come with a carbide sharpener, even the manufacturer doesn't think these knives are nice.

You can export steel. I'm paying for the German engineering, not the steel.
These aren't even worthy of gifting to someone.
