How would you get water damage if this was installed properly on a roof? Wouldn't it be just like it was raining if it leaked?

Should be ok in the beginning when properly installed.

However the plastic breaks down eventually from the sun/weathering and will form slow leaks, which causes long term damage. Seems people are also getting this damaged from shipping alone but it explains how frail this can be.

Again its up to you on whether that risk is acceptable and how quick you repair when a damage forms, but I've seen a lot of these destroy roofs.

For the hardcore, DIY SD'ers -
Buy 100+ feet of black irrigation tubing (polyethylene, ~0.5-1" diameter; the more length, the hotter the water, so go with larger diameter if you're doing 300' or so). Keep coiled, but stretch coils naturally to the side to provide more tubing exposed to the sun - you can run loops along a fence or lay on top of roof). Add diverter valve to pool RETURN from filter, allowing you to divert all/some/no water (pool can get too hot for comfort IMO), and a garden hose connector on other end of tubing (connected to hose you can put in the pool). On sunny days, the water coming out will be scalding hot, so put end of hose in deep end and warn kids to stay away (turn off when children actively swimming). This will raise pool temps depending on sun exposure (raised mine 10-15 degrees in a few days), easy to customize location/hide/remove, and only cost $30-50 in materials.

Not necessarily. All trolls are idiots, but not all idiots are trolls.

Can't believe no one's mentioned the Beluga for heating pools. These are very cheap on the bay, and work like a charm with a black water hose or two. I got my Indiana pool up to 97 degrees with this and 75' of black hose last summer.

From reading the reviews, the Beluga doesn't seem to be a very good product. If you're going to DIY, check out how to do a black poly pipe heater [com.au].

Interesting. I've used it for 3 years and had fantastic results. The DIY link you sent is nice, but seems like a ton more work than plugging in a $15 adapter (check around to find it on sale) to the pool return and connecting a water hose to it. Indiana is known to have all four seasons in one day sometimes, but by the end of summer I was trying to cool down the pool. Wife was loving it super warm, so it stayed super warm.

Just out of curiosity, how long is the hose you're using for heating, and how many gallons is your pool?

I'm using 75' of black hose, coiled up into two coils. My inground pool is 25k gallons, kidney shaped. I set the beluga to 50-75% open and let the warm water back in near a return so the hot water gets pushed around the pool upon re-entry. The black hose is directly in the sun. Indiana summers top out in the 90's, so most days we're mid-80-s to lower 90's. I also have a solar color over the pool when it's not in use, but it's one of those cheaper blue bubble wrap types. I attribute most of the heating to the beluga because the water that's coming out of the hose is hot to the touch. Maybe I just have the perfect conditions for that product, but hate to see folks drop $200 on something that's going to take up so much space and effort for a $15 attachment that I used with some cheap garden hoses that I use for other things as well.
