I think the SE is equivalent to the 5 maybe. Apple's site has a comparison for most versions of most products.

I can tell you that buying any Apple watch for an iPhone 6 is pretty rough. Bought my wife a 3 last year and had to literally take it to the Apple store to have it shipped out to be downgraded. They EOL'd the iPhone 6 iOS and continued upgrading the watch, so that even though it supported iPhone 6 at launch, it became incompatible over time due to software upgrades. Thus, most of the literature for watch 3 says compatible with iPhone 6, it's not without a major PIA factor (had to send it out multiple times because the 'geniouses' just couldn't understand why anyone would have a phone as *old* and *gross* as a 6 - Apple claims environmental responsibility but regularly EOL's hardware).

Better? Yes. Worth it? Yes. The biggest difference between series 3 and anything newer is the screen size. Series 4 and up, including the SE have a lot more screen area as it goes all the way to the corners. Probably the only reason I would consider the newer ones.

If the person is fine with a smaller screen, go for the series 3, it's a great value

iPhone 6 isn't supported anymore and the Series 3 can't be set up without a corresponding iPhone/iOS device. Apple SE supports a Parental mode.

Series 3 is a bad buy and Apple should not even sell it anymore. The internal 8GB (much less actually useable) is not even enough to upgrade the OS without first deleting everything you have on the watch.

SE is good if you can't afford a Series 6. It has the same screen as Series 4 (no always on display), same processor as Series 5, and always on altimeter that the 6 has.

As an adult with an iPhone 6 who just bought a series 6 watch when it was $250 last week, it's a huge PIA to get the watch to work on the phone. You basically risk bricking your phone to do it, and then end up restoring your phone back to iOS12 because the iPhone 6 doesn't handle iOS 14 well. That said, the kid could "upgrade" to the 1st SE iPhone, which supports all of the watches, though that'd likely only last another year or so. TLDR, if you buy an Apple watch, buy an iPhone that's newer than the 6.

No, at the moment Series 3 is still being sold by Apple but I have a feeling as soon as they announce Series 7, they will kill Series 3. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying that one now unless you really want to do almost nothing with the watch. It will feel dated right out of the box.
