With Video Card still hard to get (or people don't want to pay more than MSRP) and AMD next gen (Zen 4) coming next year with 5nm TSMC process, DDR5 memory, PCI-Express Gen 5, USB 4.0, etc, many people are start thinking about building it next year instead.

Are there any ideas of when "next year" will occur next year?

For sure but that is 12+ months away. This a great upgrade right now. Top level single threaded and gaming performance. It is less than $50 net upgrade for anyone with a 3700X. Similar multi core performance and a big increase in gaming and single threaded performance.

A quick google search show may be middle/late of next year. Of course if you have to have a new computer now, you have no choice. But if you can wait to upgrade until next year, have to decide if you already have an AM4 motherboard that can upgrade with this CPU. Or if you have to upgrade your motherboard also, should you wait for AM5 next year(?) that potentially will allow you to upgrade to future generation CPU while AM4 likely end of the line this year. Combine with the Video Card shortage, make things a bit more complicated.

Zen 4 won't be out on paper until Q4 22. And you will be dealing trash DDR5 RAM. just like DDR4 2133 a couple of years ago. PCI-E gen 5 is utterly useless for gaming. My point is it's not revolutionary upgrade. If you can afford you should upgrade every year. And this CPU is a very affordable upgrade for most people with AM4 platform to increase gaming FPS by at least 15%. I highly doubt zen4 can bring 15% in terms of FPS compare to zen3 since there will be minimal peak performance improvement in 5nm node compared to 7nm.

This is a really nice processor, pairs very well with a 3080 (if you can find one)... But honestly as mentioned above it might be better to hold off until next year zen 4 processors.... Hopefully the GPU scarcity phase will be over by then.

Like the man said, dont build a computer this year. Rely on an abacus, sun dials, board games, darkroom photo editing, and keep a notebook. Moronic comment and I'm not going to give him a direct reply.

Is 5800x worth the price difference between 5600x? More future proof?

I've been feeling the same, want to upgrade for Battlefield 6 when it comes out but can continue limping along with my i5-4670k OC'd to 5 GHz until then.

The problem is going to be that all that stuff is going to be hard to get when it comes out, too.

Not unless you do a lot of rendering or other core-intensive work. Won't make any difference for gaming, for instance. As to the future, who can say, but you'll likely replace it anyway before it matters.
