You'll probably need a free Google account to use it at all, but some things you can use it for include:

Basic questions:
What time is it?
What will the temperature be at 3PM on Friday?
How many ounces are in a liter?

Alarms:
Set an alarm for 20 minutes.
Set an alarm for 6PM.

You can use it as a broadcast/intercom through the house if you have multiple in different rooms.

You can play music from it over streaming services. (some for free)

You can connect the Bluetooth on your phone or other devices and use it as a Bluetooth speaker.

There are some games / stories that might be good for kids.

Those are some ideas. I'm sure there are others.

EDIT: If you have other smart devices such as lights or outlets, you can potentially control them from these speakers.

I have a love hate relationship with these things. It's to the point where the benefits are so numerous that I wouldn't want to live without them, but Google does so little to improve them that I find myself regularly yelling at them, like "Why the hell would you want to do that?"

I don't need any more, but this is a decent deal for the "Nest" variants.

I agree. I have an Alexa a couple feet away from Google and I happen to ask Google first because it was my 1st device and no response and then after I ask Alexa and then Google will respond. Competition I guess. No it's not a delay in case someone is wondering.

The biggest improvements were to audio quality. I'd probably only consider upgrading ones that you listen to music alot on... but honestly, you'd probably be better off going higher up their line if you want better audio quality.
