The tool choice will vary based on the starter kit. Since the starter kit and tool are added as separate items, the starter kit can be returned resulting in a deal on the tool. The prices shown next to the tools below are the tool price assuming the starter kit is returned. Another way to get the lower price on the tool is to select store pickup for the tool and delivery for the starter kit - and then cancel the starter kit.
If you happen to want just the starter kit, then purchase it with the highest priced free tool and return or cancel the tool.

When you pickup in-store, they often will just check your ID or account number and give you the order items without much issue. If you have a more observant employee, they may see you have a partially cancelled order and inquire about it. I find it works to simply say you didn't feel like waiting for the shipping time, especially if they don't have the promotional item in-stock, but if they do, and offer to sell you the promo item in-store, simply decline and say you've made other arrangements.
So, I'll say this... The only way it works now, is if you use a combination of store pickups. You gotta figure out the rest. I've done it twice now and it works. As a matter of fact I did it last week on a Milwaukee fuel chainsaw and got it for $200. Still waiting for my refund... Hint hint.
Don't use GC or store credit, be prepared to be screwed if you want a refund. The way those two work at both the home impr stores is...well it doesn't work well.

Simply not true.
This is homedepot's way of selling items lower than allowed by the manufacturer without violating the terms of agreement since they have exclusive rights to it.
Even if it's called a hack, it's not bad for business for homedepot, they do not care.
Physically, aside from the tool-less guard and wheel changes, it looks like they changed the gearbox housing to a shorter one (comparison photo attached).
