Generally top reviews aren't indicative of the experience you'll have. Sorting by most recent, and reading 20+ short reviews makes more sense for the following reasons:
1) top is biased by humor, helpfulness.. all kinds of things that are not really correlated with typical experience
2) most recent are more randomly distributed across experiences. This allows you to get a feel of what the typical experience is like.
3) if the product has changed in any way this is more likely to be reflected in most recent

So, all this to say, you should sort by most recent. I see those reviews are still lukewarm but i feel more confident now skipping this for that reason, instead of one guy's humorously told tale about an axe head flying away.

Thanks professor. Glad you came to the same conclusion as the rest of us.
Might not have been the case if the only guy who got a faulty axe told a funny story about it and got a ton of votes, while everyone else was happy. It's more common than you think

Ordered but just canceled after reading the reviews of the hatchet by itself and alot of them have been breaking it looks like they are made of brittle cast iron with a hardened lined edge. There are some pics of broken heads and handles.

Schrade does make some legitimate working knives. I don't think either of these qualify. Look for something with 1055, 1075, or 1095. These are cheap and resilient time tested steels. Lower numbers are not as hard so they sharpen easier and are more resilient to impact but don't stay sharp as long.

While alphabet soup steel can be fine in things like light duty folders, you generally don't want want it for an impact tool. Alphabet tool steel usually means some crmov combo. It's not all bad, but its generically less durable.

And this isn't exactly a hot deal. This item has been this price a considerable number of times.

Look at the picture of the review on Amazon

Surprised no one has mentioned it but the axe head blade is a thin sheet of steel LAMINATED over the cutting edge! See my pic! Don't buy this junk! Are all these other reviewers fake or willfully blind?
It appears to be steel laminated over cast iron. I don't understand why they would do this

I own the slightly larger SCAXE2L. It's a great tool but it costs $40-$50 by itself.

Any thoughts on how these would last as throwing axe/knives? Want to build a range for games.

With the amount of broken blades and empty rubber handles in the review pictures, I would look for something better quality for the safety of you and your guests.
