Generally top reviews aren't indicative of the experience you'll have. Sorting by most recent, and reading 20+ short reviews makes more sense for the following reasons:
1) top is biased by humor, helpfulness.. all kinds of things that are not really correlated with typical experience
2) most recent are more randomly distributed across experiences. This allows you to get a feel of what the typical experience is like.
3) if the product has changed in any way this is more likely to be reflected in most recent

So, all this to say, you should sort by most recent. I see those reviews are still lukewarm but i feel more confident now skipping this for that reason, instead of one guy's humorously told tale about an axe head flying away.

Quick question about California laws. I go camping very often and was thinking of getting something like this. Anyone knows whats the law is in california for keeping stuff like this in the trunk of your car?

Schrade was a good tool company until the late 2000s. They sold to an investment firm and went from high-quality to lowest-quality pretty much overnight. Don't expect very much from their steel. If you want a quality significantly better than Harbor Freight, look at Estwing.

When I read "Full Tang Hatchet and Mini Machete Combo" I was anticipating a single device with a hatchet at one end and a machete at the other...perhaps folding, in the style of a Swiss Army knife. The reality is moderately less interesting

Not as often as a rubber handle but they definitely do.

I bet that magical answer machine ... google ... knows.

Looks decent, I only need a machete for whacking English vines and this seems more sturdy than the Harbor Freight one.
It's well made and comes with a pretty sharp edge on it already. I have no regrets about mine. The wood handle is nice too

If you are actually on your way camping with something like this in your trunk you will be okay so long as you can prove it to the officer. You better have a tent, sleeping bags and other camping gear, too, and be on the road to an actual campsite. Pulling out your Coleman stove and making him a quick S'more might help too.

If you just leave it in your trunk, or have it inside the passenger compartment with you, and aren't actually in the process of going camping then you are pretty much farked. Expect a lengthy and thorough search of your car, and possible citation or arrest. Much will depend on where in California and the particular agency that pulls you over. I grew up in Los Angeles Co, and even back in the day I wouldn't drive around with such in my trunk.

Same goes for anything that can be used as a weapon: baseball bat, hockey stick, etc. You better have cleats, skates, an equipment bag and be able to tell the cop the score of your last game. The first thing the cop is going to ask is "what's this for?" And your answer better be that you have a game later and not "oh, just in case something happens."

Cops hear the camping excuse all the time after pulling machetes, big knives, hatchets and other potential weapons out of cars. They seldom give you the benefit of the doubt.
