Best to not have a phone if you worry a lot about this sort of thing.

I just checked the access permissions on the Google Play store and there's nothing about contacts or call history. You can verify this stuff yourself, you know.

I'm really happy with mine, this has been the normal low price for them, and the coupon code worked. Don't understand the two thumbs down.

Well this sucks, talked me out of buying it.

Edit: I was thinking, if I wipe an old backup phone of all its data and just put this app on it, they wouldn't get much information out of me, correct?
The prior poster is incorrect. I bought this at full price and love it.

And give the app access to everything on your phone - contacts, call history, pictures, access to the camera. This app is a nightmare. I wouldn't put this on my neighbors grill, much less my own.
The literal only permission it asks, only while in use, is location. Which I'll change it tonight if it even needs that one. They don't ask for anything else, because I'm pretty sure they don't care to find out that you don't talk to anyone and your only pictures are memes.

Bought this last time, the app is horrible. Returned it.
There are 2 different apps that work with this thermometer. One does suck. The other works well.
BBQ-4T is the one I use on my Samsung and no issues. The other app was not user friendly.

This is bogus. I installed the app and the permissions were reasonable and did not include the items this guy listed.

I bought it a year ago and amazingly 3 of the 4 probes went bad after just a couple uses. I had them warranty replaced, and 2 of the replacements went bad as well. I can't believe the failure rate of the probes, and I'm super careful when cleaning and storing them. I wouldn't recommend this product for that reason - which is disappointing because the device itself is well built
Thermocouple wires are pretty delicate. Out of curiosity, did you put any sharp bends in the cable? A handful of sharp bends back and forth on the solid core alloys they use in thermocouples would probably break them.

My friend, who I look to advice for all things bbq, said this generally favors well on his BBQ forums. You still need a controller to regulate the pit, but I already have one of those. This will give me multiple probes to validate the pit and meat, and let me monitor it from a distance, where my controller does not provide wifi or bluetooth access. For $50, and so many positive reviews on Amazon, I will try it out for a backup device.

The iOS app uses location and it does it to provide weather, which can be helpful data to have when smoking meat.

It's possible, but no sharper bend than putting the probe into food on the smoker (or in a roasting pan) and gently setting the lid on the braided wire

The probe wires kink themselves very easily. I'm very careful with them, but I'll be surprised if they all last a year. I'm otherwise happy with it. The app is lame, but I'll try changing the settings mentioned by others to improve background notifications.

Had mine for over a year, got it for the same price, and used it again today while whole smoking turkey. Great little device.

I bought it last time around @ $50 and have been very happy with it. You will not find another reputable brand anywhere near this price. I use it primarily as my meat probe while smoking pork and chicken- never seen a disconnect from the app to the device or the device to the wifi signal.

The app has a lot of features but the one I like the most is the temp chart and the ability to export all the data it gathers.

Really impressive and forward thinking by their development team.

NOT entirely true.... Access to Phone , Contacts. & Camera are denied on my phone. I only allowed Location & Storage. Location so I can monitor the cook if I have to run to the store, and Storage so i can save the temperature history graph of the cook.
